Ben N. Stevenson a prominent Dillon businessman dies at Barrett hospital after pneumonia followed a long career in local business and public service. Survivors include daughter Marjorie Stevenson and brother C. G. Stevenson. Funeral services held at the Methodist church with Masonic rites at the graveside.
The Dillon Parent-Teacher Association held the final meeting of the season at the Bagley building. Officers for the next year were installed by Mrs. A F Waldorf: H Vanairsdale president W J Romersa vice president J J Brown secretary George Hughes treasurer. A program featured kindergarten band music and officer installations.
Forty four seniors will receive diplomas tonight as R. M. Barrett presents degrees at the Normal college auditorium. Co valedictorians Jo Ann Fuller and William Tower share scholastic honors with 2 811 grade points each. Citizenship awards and athletic trophies will be given. Dr. J A Meeke delivered the baccalaureate address Sunday evening. A spring instrumental concert with nearly 100 performers directed by L A Gregory is planned for May 22 at the training school auditorium featuring the Elks drum and bugle corps and soloist Marguerite Johnson plus multiple orchestral and vocal pieces.
Beaverhead post arranges a Memorial Day program at Mountain View Cemetery next Monday evening May 29. The Legion color guards and Elks drum corps will honor veterans with a firing squad and echo taps. Conrad Orr will give the memorial address, and William Tower will recite In Flanders Fields. Poppy day events follow on May 27 with Auxiliary volunteers distributing handmade memorial poppies.
Washington notes the Senate rejected Carter Glass and King attempts to trim the farm bill as the chamber approved a record 1.218 billion dollar section for Agriculture for 1940. Parity payments and crop surplus export subsidies were increased, while the House faces further conference and non military War Department funding awaits.
Anna Patterson a 28 year Dillon resident and library attendant died at Barrett hospital after a short illness. Her brother in law Ben Stevenson died earlier at the same hospital. Born in Williamsport Pa on April 4 1868 she moved to Dillon in 1892 and belonged to the Presbyterian church and Manse society. Survived by four nieces and two nephews, funeral held at the Presbyterian church with Rev Paris E Wells officiating and burial in Mountain View cemetery.
Bernard Williams reports payments to 64 range participants totaling 16856.04 and 99 crop participants totaling 6119.74. Range actions included deferred grazing on 18826 acres, reseeding on 7225 mountain meadow acres with 72250 pounds seed, water development with one reservoir, two wells, six springs. Crop actions covered reseeding 187.4 acres, seeding 2211.6 acres, turning under 339.9 acres, weed control, renovating 93.8 acres, and 67.5 acres sown to timothy and redtop.
Billings Poly won the small college conference track meet at Billings with Normal college second. E Schultz set a pole vault record at 12 feet and Hamilton posted a 5 feet 11 inches high jump mark. Davison swept field events with wins in javelin, shot put, and discus and led high point. Other Dillon points came from Schultz in the high hurdles and Homme in the mile.
The Double-four bridge club was entertained on Wednesday afternoon with a social session and friendly matches. Members enjoyed light refreshments and casual play, fostering a cordial atmosphere and steady participation.
A near closing of the April term of the district court is expected next week with civil cases down to the last dockets. Dale Rumbaugh received 12 years in state prison for burglary of the Lima club. his brother Carl got 10 years. Both tak en to Deer Lodge that afternoon. Remi Baril et al won $144.25 plus interest from May 7 1937 in a civil action against Tony Kruletz. Montana Powder Co. vs Paul Temple was dismissed by Judge Henry G Rodgers. Francis O Leary, 21, got 12 years for car theft. he had prior convictions and was taken to Deer Lodge. Fred E Dingrey won $152.50 against Tony Kruletz. Continued on Page Four.
