Future Farmers Take Field Trip to Bloody Dick Station

Eighteen members of Beaverhead Future Farmers of America and 4 H clubs joined a May 16 field trip to Bloody Dick ranger station. Beaverhead National Forest hosted a demo on range surveys and livestock management, planted Crested Wheat Grass and Brome Grass in an experimental plot, then capped the day with a baseball game and lunch. Attendees included John F. Shaffner, Bernard Williams, Bjork, K D Flock, and 18 club members such as Dean Shaffner, Joe Hermann, John Sweeney, Junior Holjoran, and John Rozman.

Poppy Day Proclaimed in Dillon for Memorial Poppies

Mayor D A Galt proclaims Saturday May 28 as Poppy Day in Dillon. Citizens urged to wear memorial poppies honoring World War I dead and support American Legion and Auxiliary poppy distributions. The notice recalls Dillon’s WWI effort and sacrifice in 1918.

Dillon Choral Club Presents Evening Concert at Training School

A large audience attended a Dillon Choral Club concert at the training school auditorium Wednesday. Directed by Mrs. W. G. Gilbert with local talent, the program featured vocal solos by Wilma McLaughlin Wright and Genevieve Nelson, a piano solo by Marguerite Collins, and a Ruth Phelps dance number, with Mrs. T. W. Sargent as accompanist.

Meltons Runner-Up in State Handball Doubles

Senator George Melton and son Monte took second place in the state handball doubles in Butte after beating Fort Peck in the semifinals and losing to Gallant and Emmett 21-17 21-18 in the final. Monte also won his consolation singles match. The Meltons earned praise for a strong showing and Monte was highlighted as a rising talent.

Dillon Shooters Retain Standing In Telegraphic Shoot

Dillon Gun club members posted high scores Sunday with five straight 25s on telegraphic and registered shoots. Emerick Free Petersen led with top scores, Helena tied with Dillon at 75, while Sheridan made 72.

High School Graduation Dance At Dillmont Park

Following the graduation exercises at the high school Thursday evening a dance will be held at Dillmont park with music by Francis Deans Dance Band. The program includes tap numbers by Merle and Ken selections by the Corn Melody Boys and the band trio. Public invited. This will be Deans band final summer appearance as the boys leave soon for a Weapon's engagement at Glacier Park.

Who's Who Among American College Students Honored

Carl O. Hansen of Montana State college son of Carl Hansen of Armstead has attained the Who's Who distinction among American universities and colleges. Hansen represents his college among the nation’s outstanding students, a selection limited to about one half of one percent of peers. The 1986 edition prints 1620 biographies from nearly 400 colleges. honors reflect leadership, service, activities, and future usefulness. Hansen’s activities include Cadet Major, Bobcat Battalion president, Les Bouffons president, Student Senate, Intercollegiate Knights, Scabbard and Blade, and livestock judging leadership plus travel, shooting hobbies, and livestock production plans.

A rural fire truck from the Jim Madsen Ranch six miles north of town raced to a shed fire on Tuesday afternoon but arrived too late to save the building as flames and smoke were already high.

Lyons Dies of Spotted Fever in Armstead

Walter H. Lyons of Armstead, 48, died at Barrett hospital Thursday night from spotted fever after a short illness. Born February 24, 1888 in Canyon City, Oregon, he came to Beaverhead County years ago and ran a garage. A World War veteran, he is survived by his wife, father, two sisters, and a brother in Oregon. Funeral held Monday at Brundage chapel with Methodist rites and burial in Mountain View cemetery where Beaverheads Post granted military honors.

Unusual Battle on Main Street Between Stallions

A dramatic morning clash unfolded on Montana Street as two stallions of unknown owners fought, biting and striking while chased by startled pedestrians and vehicles. The fight, believed sparked by jealousy over a white mare, ended as the horses vanished toward Railroad Avenue near Helena Street crossing, witnessed by merchants and others.

State park survey near Dillon eyed under WPA program

A survey has been conducted on lands about a mile north of Dillon along the Beaverhead river for a proposed state park. An arch entrance and beautified grounds with camp stoves benches and tables are planned to serve outing parties and tourists under WPA oversight. Engineer Goose of Twin Bridges heads the project as details for land purchase are awaited. Firemen fought a garage truck blaze west of town early Wednesday using the chemical apparatus and pump truck.

Former Resident Dies After Tank Fall in Spokane

C. D. Dwight Conger, a native of this city and longtime watchman at the Standard Oil plant in Spokane, died Tuesday after falling from a 50 foot gas storage tank. He had climbed the tank to measure contents when the accident occurred. Born in Dillon, he was son of Judge Everton J. Conger, Civil War veteran who helped capture Lincoln’s assassin. He left here about 1907.
