Commencement week begins with the annual class play at the training school auditorium and ends with graduation in the high school gym. Sixty seniors—31 boys and 29 girls—will receive diplomas. Baccalaureate is led by J A Meeke, H J Schmidt, W J Loar, and A W Nelson.
Alden Bowering six years old son of Mr and Mrs George Bowering of this city died Tuesday at home after a scarlet fever illness. He is survived by his parents and three other children. Private funeral services were held at the grave at 11 o clock Wednesday morning under the auspices of the L D church.
Commencement week features three act farce It Pays to Advertise at the training school auditorium Tuesday night. Cast includes Ruth Kelly William Boetticher Jane Waldorf Junior Ditty Lew Brundage Glenn Hocking Marie Knox Robert Lee Dorothy Anne Davis Roy Forester Arthur Hansen George Kennedy Floyd Kenison Archie Anderson Ryan Dodge. Production staff and helpers listed with directors Balland Foote and others handling advertising tickets ushers and properties.
Miss Alice Conway a former Dillon resident died at her Helena home on May 2. She graduated Beaverhead County High School and State Normal College and taught at Reichle. Survived by father George B. Conway four sisters and a brother. Funeral held in Helena May 4. W B Hartwig filed for Dillon county commissioner on the Democratic ticket.
George Gosman presided at a Dillon Rotary meeting. Local high school seniors performed a skit from It Pays to Advertise, presented Tuesday night. President Robert E. Albright announced the Kalispel Rotary convention May 24 to 26 and noted music for next week’s dinner with Prof. Robert Clark as speaker, the Dean's Dance band providing the music.
William Henry McMannis 80, pioneer mining man and rancher of the county, died at his home after a lingering illness. A Braddock, Pennsylvania native, he came west as a young man and settled in Colorado before moving to Bannack in 1889 to mine, later ranching in Horse Prairie until retirement. Survived by his widow, a daughter Mrs. Raymond Schwartz, three sons Harry Vere and Bill, several grandchildren, two brothers and a sister in Pennsylvania. Funeral held Saturday at 2 pm from Lani Brundage chapel with Rev. Wi HL Witcheld officiating.
Due to a plan change the Homemakers club met at Mrs. K D Flock's instead of Mrs. W J Romersa's Monday afternoon with Mrs. Wallace Forsgren as assistant hostess. Miss Lillian Stone spoke on finishing Garmerite and an exhibit from the JR Baby Girl born Wednesday was noted.
Joe Brunier, a 63 year old Swiss native and longtime local rancher, was found slain in a Hogan's alley cabin with a single bit axe. Ernest Marchand, a 48 year old herder, is held for questioning after admitting drinking with Brunier but denying memory of the killing. An inquest returned a finding of death by a blow from an axe and recommended Marchand be held for trial.
Governor Molt may seek abolition of all millage taxes for state government except the Greater University of Montana after the State Board of Equalization reports a drop in total expenditures from 3,251,159 in 1924-25 to 2,998,625 in 1934-35. New revenue sources in 1934-36 added 1,146,019, yet funds were diverted to specialized accounts like water and school funds, while overall public services costs fell due to staff and district consolidations.
Beaverhead county residents who applied for old age assistance must renew their applications. At Albert Baker's offices, required information includes a core estimate of assets and insurance, plus naturalization details if foreign born. Renewal forms are filed through Jane.
Joe Halterman a longtime P. and O. ranch hand and Beaverhead county resident since youth died at Barrett hospital after a brief illness. A Wallace Idaho son arrived for his funeral held Wednesday afternoon with Rev H N Tragitt of St James church officiating.
The Beaverhead unit of the American Legion auxiliary will distribute memorial poppies in Dillon on Saturday May 23 to honor World War dead. Poppy Day chairman Mrs Fred Critz leads extensive preparations with the aim of supporting living veterans and their families through local Legion and auxiliary welfare work funded by poppy sales.
The 19 mile central Montana Highway contract will finish and the Grass Range to Jordan 100 mile section will be resurfaced this summer. About 40 miles remain from Great Falls to the eastern state line requiring new fiscal year appropriations starting July 1. Leaders in Garfield McCone Prairie Dawson Musselshell Petroleum Fergus and Judith Basin counties plan a May 15 booster meeting at Sidney to accelerate completion.
State University in Missoula hosts the Montana high school newspaper contest during track meet week. Forty four high schools enter publications, judged by the Montana Editorial association. Certificates of merit are awarded with second and third place winners announced.
Republicans met at Albert Baker's office with Dan Mooney presiding as they elected I A Hazelbaker and T E Gilbert as delegates to the state convention and Doyle Gordon and Albert Baker as alternates. Democrats gathered in the courtroom with C E B Blinn presiding electing George M Melton and J C Metten as delegates and Leo Truax and Norman Nelson as alternates.
At the annual American Legion auxiliary meeting Monday night at city hall Mrs. C J Hievern was elected president for the year. Other officers include Mrs. Fred Lyon past president, Mrs C M Casterline first vice president, Mrs George Gosman second vice president, Mrs J W Walters secretary treasurer, Mrs Mina Perkins chaplain, Mrs J D Lee sergeant at arms, Mrs C T Callahan historian and an executive board of Mrs Lyon Mrs W F Cashmore and Mrs Fredi Critz. A program featured readings and piano solos, with national news and group singing. A motion approved a $6 donation to the local Red Cross flood relief fund. Refreshments were served by the Poppy committee.
Three Dillon shooters posted 25 in a postal shoot as part of a team victory over Billings Glendive and Sheridan. Ted Renfro Hap Apgar and W M Stone posted straight runs, with Renfro achieving 99x100 and 98x100 performances. Other shooters like Lynch Ben Boyer Alma Westergaard and A E John also posted scores in the event.
