Vocational Congress Named Bright Success For Girls
The county eighth grade vocational congress held last Thursday and Friday drew strong attendance and lively contests. Albert Polish won the Pearl I Smith spelling contest with about forty entrants, Katherine Keenan placed second. prizes were five and two fifty dollars. Betty Roe won the declamation contest, Delia Butts second, Thelma Perkins third, and Raymond Thompson fourth in related events. Virginia Randolph led the arithmetic contest, with Polish second and Donald Bayerd third. Penmanship winners were Hughette Needham first, Randolph second, Burl Martin third. Prizes were donated by Dillon merchants.

County commissioners met in regular session and then toured Armstead to review road, bridge, and fence matters. Carl Mast won a Birch Creek road contract with the county contributing 3800. Sheriff Dan Mooney received a special deputy appointment for the railroad construction period at Armstead. Andrew Dixon’s Blacktail road repair petition was referred to Commissioner Anderson. Henry Miller, Civil War veteran, may receive county transport to North Carolina for the Confederate Veterans Home. Mrs. Hazel Kingsley, county nurse, reported to the board, which approved.
