Forty cases of bonded liquor bound for Monida were seized Tuesday afternoon by Deputy Sheriff W E Barry and returned to Dillon. The liquor, allegedly intended for sale in Idaho, was traced from a Kentucky distillery and stored at the county courthouse as evidence.
Announcement this week says the city caucus will be held in the city hall auditorium at 8 o'clock Thursday evening. One alderman from each of the four wards will be nominated for the April 2 city election. only the Citizens' party ticket is indicated. Aldermen whose terms expire are Gosman Ward 1 Featherly Ward 2 Williams Ward 3 Orr Ward 4. A group of Dillon residents visited mining properties in the Argenta district to gain practical knowledge from the recent mining short course.
Roy Haight district director will lead two county meetings next Saturday at the courthouse. Hog raisers meet at 11 AM to elect the county committee and file applications. Wheat raisers who applied for allotments gather Saturday afternoon at the courthouse. Bernard Williams serves as temporary chairman.
A Beaverhead unit of the American Legion auxiliary presented a Sunday program from Station KGIR Butte. The lineup included piano solos by Genevieve Green, a piano piece "Community Service" by Berniece Metlen, descriptive music selections "The Storm" and "Tom O'Shanter" by Genevieve Green, and songs with guitar by Warren Crane.
W. B. Hartwig elected president and Robert Barrett vice-president of the Dillon Country Club for 1984. Plans call for a new course on Barrett’s donated land east of town with an existing building to be converted into a clubhouse. A meeting at 8 PM Friday at City Hall discusses construction and greens expected ready by April 16. Anyone interested may attend.
The Farmers' union hosts a winter dance series climax on Saturday night at Dillmont park with Fay's Hawaiians supplying music. Attendees in gingham and overalls are welcome though not required. A dog calling contest at noon features a valuable prize, and Uncle Ned sings When the Work's All Done Next Fall.
The Dillon Business and Professional Women's club sponsored a Saturday evening City Hall dance that attracted a large crowd. Music was provided by the Baxter Tonney orchestra and club members thank the public for their support of the first event.
The state highway commission calls for sealed bids to grade and pave with Portland cement concrete and build drainage structures on Dillon-Butte road sections D and E in this city. Section D covers 0.085 miles on Montana street from Virginia to Butte street. Section E starts about 100 feet south of Peindexter street. Bids due at the capitol in Helena by 10 am March 30, 1934, with wage rates set at 60 cents per hour for unskilled and 75 cents for the lowest skilled class.
Residents urged to attend a Wednesday April 4 gathering at Hartwig peat with emphasis on personal impressions and a call to hear the event for themselves.
Dillon Rotary Club and guests will hear Arthur B. Mayhew director of Rotary International and head of Mayhew Lumber in Uvalde Texas speak at the resumed Friday meeting. Members and others must notify President Stephan or Treasurer Gilbert by 6 pm. Mayhew, born 1879 in Wellington Kansas, has long led Texas lumber groups and helped organize multiple Rotary clubs including Uvalde.
Dillon basketball fans learned that Westwood lost 39 to 38 to the Great Falls Monarchs in the semi finals. McGinley led Dillon with 17 points in the Daly Sheas rout and McGinley was named center on the all state team. Rouse earned guard honors with the third high scoring tally of 56 points in four games. The Butte Freebournes won the tournament, Great Falls Monarchs finished second.
By noon today 313 students were registered at Montana State Normal College and enrollment is expected to hold steady for the spring quarter. Of the total, 75 are men students.
The Beaverhead unit of the Legion auxiliary's Sunday musical program was enjoyed by many city residents. Ell Poindexter, newly appointed manager of the state liquor store, was discussed in connection with the event.
Amos Campbell 56 a long time Poindexter & Orr ranch employee died Monday at Barrett hospital after months of declining health. Born May 22 1878 in Oklahoma he moved here in 1887 and served as a trusted worker at the ranch. Survived by two brothers in Anaconda and California funeral at Brundage chapel with Rev H N Tragitt. interment Mountain View cemetery.
At a PTA gathering Tuesday evening Principal W. W. Wehl spoke on The Outlook in High School Education. An entertainment number featured a clarine solo by Tom Newnesaccom.
Beavers won the debate by unanimous vote last Thursday night. Paul Fidler and Jack Reeves argued for the motion that the United States should adopt the essential features of the British system of radio broadcasting and operation. Anaconda's Ned Roschan and Elizabeth Hohen faced them. Jack Gilbert chaired with judges Genevieve Albertson R. E. Albright and Rush Jordan from the Normal College faculty.
Local CWA officials announced sharp cuts to activity. All work projects stop March 22 except airport operations. Ninety Beaverhead county workers will be affected. J C G Fuller became local manager of the National Re-employment department, succeeding Warren Shaw.
The annual Mother and Daughter program of fun songs and games will be held Friday evening March 23 at 7 30 in the high school gymnasium. Mrs Harold M Warner leads the singing and a prologue is by Mrs Shannon and Miss Snodgrass followed by a playlet Heirlooms of Yesterday and Tomorrow with listed cast and club participants. continuation noted on page eight.
Dillon youths show keen interest in a community kite carnival sponsored by local businessmen. The event is set for Saturday March 31 with free entry for ages 6 to 16, no admission fee for spectators, and liberal cash prizes for winners. Entries run March 20 to March 26, with home made kites and separate classes by kite type and by age and sex.
John W. Berry aged 58 died at his Kentucky avenue home last Friday after a lingering illness. A Missouri native who moved here five years ago he worked as a carpenter before illness retired him. He is survived by his widow two daughters Mrs. Herman Peterson and Lillian Berry and two sons Clifford and Herbert. The funeral was Sunday with Rev. R. O. Shannon officiating and burial at Mountain View Cemetery.
Eight year old Hugh Galloway son of Mr and Mrs Hugh Galloway of Divide was killed when he darted from behind a parked car and was struck by John H. Bourquin’s car near the highway. Bourquin pleaded not guilty to manslaughter in Butte court with $1000 bond set.
