An August 7 commemoration at Gibbons battlefield in the Big Hole region marks the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Big Hole. Delegations from Missoula, Darby, Hamilton, Stevensville, Anaconda and more seek co operation from the war department. The event will precede the battle date to allow Montana Pioneers to attend.
The jury found N. J. Gribnau guilty of a statutory charge involving a 16 year old Lima girl and set a two to four year penitentiary term. Judge H. G. Rodgers pronounced sentence, and Gribnau was taken to Deer Lodge to begin his term. The trial also featured the defendant’s wife and the young girl with infant present.
Robert Finch of Beaverhead high school placed third in the extempore speaking contest in Missoula held during the basketball tournament. The two Butte contestants won first and second. The debate topic was United States Should not Withdraw its Army Forces from Nicaragua.
Beaverhead post of the American Legion offers its annual minstrel and vaudeville show in Dillon. The final rehearsal drew praise as the best amateur show in Montana, with out-of-town fans like Jimmy Hayes predicting a superior 1920s style program. The cast includes end men Bud Hartwig George Melton Jim McCollum Warren Stone and many Dillon and Anaconda participants, with a Bayter Tonrey orchestra and production staff guiding acts across four colorful numbers.
W. S. Pyle and officials form a company to develop shale oil in Beaverhead County with first retort unit to be installed within six weeks. About 1 800 acres secured from Crampton and others. Tests show oil and amanita content. plant expected to process 1 000 tons daily with byproducts trading bricks paints and dyes. Pyle returns from Vancouver to supervise installation efforts.
George Whitaker, once a rancher south of Dillon now runs an oil operation. A Cambridge Ohio dispatch notes his Whitaker farm well for Eastern Carbon Black Co in Westland Township produced 6,000,000 cubic feet of gas per day, marking a first for the Cambridge field.
William Lovell reports a Montana picnic in Sycamore Grove Los Angeles on Washington's birthday drawing Beaverhead county’s largest turnout with over a hundred residents, many wintering in California. Despite storms and rain attendees exchanged greetings and shared brief talks during a mingle format event.
Ralph McFadden chaired the Dillon Rotary Club meeting at the Andrus hotel. The program included piano pieces by McFadden and vocal selections by Miss Marjorie Stevenson plus two harmonized numbers by the Rotary quartet. Francis Tonney was welcomed as a new member.
In a Monday report, workers found fourteen feet of sand at Whitaker farm down to 3 600 feet. The scene echoed with a gas roar audible for over a mile, indicating a major subsurface event near the facility.
The Women's Glee Club of Normal College begins its second tour next Tuesday with a concert at Whitehall. The group returns to Twin Bridges Wednesday and performs in Sheridan Thursday, accompanied by the college orchestra. Previous outings drew praise in multiple towns and a Dillon audience recently.
Herbert C Hansen a native Dillon boy now a county road engineer in southern California spends two weeks in town to tend to business. This marks his first return in 14 years, having previously lived on the Evergreen farm north of the city, now the home of Mr and Mrs Quitman Owen.
