Charles Higgenbottom Frontiersman Dies At 86
Charles Higgenbottom 86 longtime western frontiersman died Tuesday at Oerett hospital after a yearlong illness. A former pony express rider for Wells Fargo and other outfits he later drove mining camp supplies and worked on ranches in Beaverhead County. He claimed to have known Jim Bridger Custer and Calamity Jane and recounted many frontier adventures. Funeral services were held Thursday at Brundage chapel with Rev H B Ricketts officiating and interment in Mountain View cemetery. no relatives located.

Annual Horse Sale Slated Next Monday at Dillon
The Dillon Horse Sales company will hold its annual auction next Monday at 1 PM south of the city. George Ditty oversees the event with 500 horses expected, including 300 draft animals and 50 saddle horses. Clyde Moore of Billings will manage the ring, Bert Williams the clerk, and stock should be in the yards the day before.

Crowley Oil to Extend Drilling in Frying Pan Basin
Frank Haganbarth of Salt Lake City and Burton E. Greene of Los Angeles have closed a contract with Crowley Oil Co to start drilling on Crowley leases west of Dillon by April 15. The new company controls 12,500 acres including 2,560 acres under government permit and about 10,000 more in the Frying Pan Basin. Sonntag Drilling Co of Casper has the first well contract, with a 15 inch hole planned until oil is struck.

Rife Opposes Bill Eliminating Judges in State
The House passed substitute House Bill 284 eliminating seven district judges across the state and consolidating districts. Beaverhead’s Rise to strike failed as debate ended. Critics Adair Nagle Mason pressed to save a judge, but the measure moved forward. Rep Burns said the change would save about $70,000 annually, with each judge costing roughly $10,000 in salary expenses and stenography.
