The regional forester warns that from July 1 all parties entering National forests in Montana northern Idaho and eastern Washington by car or pack train must carry a shovel ax and bucket. The tools help extinguish small fires and aid camp safety and escape from soft roads.
Matthew Theil, 28, a longtime Dell resident born in Soda Springs Idaho, died suddenly last Tuesday at Oscar Gravely ranch after an acute intestinal illness. He is survived by his mother Mrs Harry Horsely of American Falls Idaho and two brothers Jack Jr Warren. Funeral services were set for Thursday at 2 30 from Grace Methodist Church with Rev J A Meeke officiating under Elks auspices. Interment followed at Mountain View Cemetery.
Bernard Williams supervisor at Beaverhead county high school reports Smith-Hughes agricultural projects largely involve cattle and sheep. Andy Gilbert is growing 25 acres of certified seed potatoes for W A Irvine of Leadore Idaho. Williams notes projects are up to standard. On return from Medicine Lodge, he nearly hit a deer, which leaped a fence and vanished.
The M Club team of State Normal narrowly beat Anaconda 9 to 8 in a lively Sunday contest on the local diamond. A second scheduled game failed to start as visitors did not arrive. A junior league pick team beat Bannack 11 to 9. Rotary juniors defeated Elks 15 to 4 with Lew Brundage striking out seven and Bob Lee hitting at a .722 average after seven games and 18 hits.
Donetta Gilbert world champion relay rider will compete in Dillon three day race meet July 2 3 and 4. Manager Scott Halburton announced she will ride in relay races on the first and last days and will bring eight horses led by Fair Lawn. Dr M C Smetters of Butte owns Goldie Crystal a top bred mare brought to Dillon. Brig Young will race Fox, a recently purchased horse.
The Dillon Rotary Club observed past presidents night at the Metlen hotel with all ex-officers present except A T Peterson. Each past president spoke briefly and the entertainment committee displayed projector pictures of ex-presidents from infancy to older ages. Dr. Walter Stephan will take office next week as the regular meeting moves to 6 30 on Wednesday due to the Fourth of July holiday. Visitors included Mayor Emerick Representative Metlen and Commissioners Rife Wahl and Hartwig spoke on federal road work prospects in Beaverhead County urging coordinated action for benefits from the farm to market highway program.
A two day Dillon celebration blends pioneer pageantry with a modern race meet. Beaverhead post of the American Legion stages Vigilante revival at Dillmont Park with Bannack and Virginia City re-creations, a popularity contest, dancing, music by Baxter Tonrey, and a canoe regatta by Louis Schmittroth.
A varied student program will be staged at the Normal college assembly Wednesday at 10:00. Performances include Aileen Berry and Ebba Anderson in the Romping Romper Clog, Elizabeth Ballard tap dances, Lucille Maillet songs, Ruth Phelps dances, and a dance by Provo, Anderson, and Phelps. The MacMillan company displays school books this week. The spring honor roll lists 49 names for over two points per credit.
Amid continued dry weather grasshoppers pose a growing threat in the Centennial valley. County officials Hartwig and Martin with Ed Roe inspect ground conditions to plan an eradication campaign. Montana State College entomology survey notes 500 to 600 hoppers per square foot. Arsenic and bran mixture proposed for immediate control with farmer cooperation.
Beav erhead County flockmasters near end of shearing season as wool fills the First National warehouse and cars head east. Peterson & Hansen clip from Lima sold to Walter Foster for 26 1/2 cents, with other sales at 25 cents. Haying to start after July 4 holidays. growers expect price terms soon.
Former Dillon residents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lovell and their three sons visit the city, staying with Mr. and Mrs. Will Lovell on South Atlantic street. He is associate editor of the Racine Times Call and has long worked in newspapers in Dillon and Butte. Mrs. Lovell taught at the Normal college. He, an aviation enthusiast, took a valley flight in Fred Woodside's plane during the visit.
The Beaver head Red Cross annual business meeting was held at the training school auditorium last Wednesday evening. Officers elected include T. 12. Luebben as county chairman J. C. Fuller as vice chairman and roll call chairman and Miss Norah Connelley as secretary and treasurer. Reports covered nursing operations cotton goods flour and county nurse work. Dr W H Stephan spoke on ticks and prevention and thanks were given to retiring secretary Georgia Mathews.
Milton Weil a New York youth employed at the Wise River conservation camp was brought to Dillon and jailed after allegedly striking one of the camp cooks in the head with an iron bar. The cook was struck from behind and is not believed seriously hurt.
A 20 year old man from Vanita Oklahoma was found dead in a box car in the Lima yards last Friday morning by traveling companions including his brother Roy. Coroner James E. Phillips ruled natural causes and no inquest. The body was returned to Dillon with H M Brundage and shipped to Oklahoma for interment after a five day stay in the city.
Seven crews operate from Wise River camp handling campground improvements and range fences. A major project between Wise River and Elkhor advances by machinery on double shifts, with roads not under construction. Crews wrap up one range fence and creosote about 6,500 posts while maintaining a spike camp at the head of the West Fork of the Madison.
