Two men near Selway park pulled a five foot thirty pound cuttlefish from the Beaverhead river. J. F. Wiksdal secured the specimen, authorities begin preservation, and Dillon residents flock to see the unlikely deep sea creature found inland.
A Holstein cow Banestine Belle de Kol set a new world record for milk and butter production at East Clarion Ohio. The record was achieved under the care of Han Deane & Brother with BRS Be by.
After a four day trial in Judge McClernan's court the jury awarded A. A. Grorud 2500 damages against J. P. Lossl and associates. Grorud, a shipping and freight agent for Lossl’s firms at Divide and for the Oregon Short Line, was arrested on embezzlement charges but not held for trial. He claims the arrest damaged his career and reputation. The jury was out four hours.
The Methodist church hosts anniversary and memorial services next Sunday with sermons by Dr. Van Orsdel Rev. Tait and Dr. Mills. Special music is planned and all are welcome. Monday evening Dr. Van Orsdel will lecture on the Battle of Gettysburg recounting his on site experiences.
A Helena dispatch reports Prof. J E Monroe has accepted the acting presidency of the Montana State Normal College at Dillon. He succeeds Dr. H H Swain who resigned. Monroe, a chemistry and physics professor, is veteran acting president in Swain's absence and enjoys strong support from students alumni and Dillon’s civic community.
A state cooperation among the Montana Agricultural College the State Fair board and the Superintendent of Public Instruction aims to train youth for efficiency by sending the boy and girl in each county who excel in post industrial showing to the Helena state fair next fall.
Chicago June 18 Taft supporters at the Republican National Convention elect Senator Root of New York as temporary chairman defeating Governor Francis E McGovern of Wisconsin with 558 to 502 votes amid Roosevelt faction clashes. The scene underscores a tight contest and predicted further action in the convention. Chicago June 20 The Roosevelt delegates plan further independent action as tensions rise with credentials battles and possible bolt threats.
Miss Helen Sutherland formerly of Butte led a kitchen knife attack at the Wisdom hotel. Lester Davis the clerk lost two fingers and suffered a severed tendon after intervening when she threatened a waitress. Deputy Sheriff W. J. Tope brought Sutherland to Dillon where she pleaded guilty to first degree assault.
Workmen at a local monument factory uncovered a leaden box sealed inside a granite corner stone from the old customs house. The box contained newspapers and government papers including a city directory from 1854 and a plate with city state and national officer names.
Dennis Smith, a seventy year old prospector, was trapped by a cave-in last week near Wisdom. He crawled to his cabin after two days with a broken hip and endured six days before rescue. Wunder lich brothers found him, moved him to Wisdom, then Dillon, and he is now at the county farm.
July 1 marks the first major horse sale in the Big Hole basin with four hundred head to be sold to the highest bidder. Manager Charles F. Miller and auctioneer Col Clyde Moore lead the event expected to draw a large turnout of horsemen.
Aged 94, "Blanket Bill" Jarman died at his Ferndale Washington home joined by his niece Mrs. William Manning. He arrived on Puget Sound in 1848 aboard a Hudson Bay training boat and was captured by local Indigenous people for two months before being ransomed with blankets, earning his nickname.
Special to Tribune. The Oregon Short Line depot at Armstead burned to the ground around 1 am along with a carload of gasoline. Explosion of moving picture films started the blaze. Baggage mail and express were destroyed. household goods of Mr and Mrs Tonney also perished. Several cars of dynamite prompted residents to flee. The G and P engine moved explosive and burning oil cars to save the office and Inn. Estimated loss about $75,000 with $3,000 in the office safe likely intact after cooling.
One boy and one girl from each county will visit Helena September 23 28 as guests of the State Fair. They receive free board lodging and fair admission and participate in morning instruction by agricultural college faculty in stock judging for boys and domestic science for girls. Winners receive trips for best corn ears or potatoes and best corset cover or canned fruit exhibit. The Sells Floto Circus arrived from Idaho Falls with a full train of animals and equipment. The show features elephants camels and a large menagerie. It costs 3200 a day to run and tickets are 25 cents, so profits are unlikely in Dillon. The parade occurred at noon and the 2 pm show followed. Notable acts include Renaldo the dancing horse Jumbo the second and a grand calliope led by Harry Wills. The circus is owned by the Kansas City Post and Denver Post and valued at 3.5 million with 2.5 million in insurance.
