Montana officials including Senator B K Wheeler and H D Rolph sought two to three hundred thousand dollars for a pest battle against Mormon crickets in Montana. An additional $150,000 had already been allocated. readers urged continued work without interruption.
East Helena rallied from an 8 1 deficit to beat Dillon 4 3 after a tense last inning in a State League game. Dillon led 8 3 through five frames, but East Helena bats and weathered conditions produced twelve Dillon errors and six East Helena hits.
Mrs Dora Banks and her granddaughter Margaret Banks left Thursday for a year long stay in San Diego California. Mrs Banks will visit her son Harry there. The Banks home on Thomson Avenue has recently been sold to Frank Esterwald.
Word has been received of the passing of one of Montana's early settlers, Mrs. John Shive mother of the late Mrs. William Dunn sr of Dillon, at Blackfoot Idaho, Sunday morning. She is survived by a sister Mrs G H Howard and a brother Duncan Adams both of Dillon a sister Mrs Enright of Burns Oregon and three grandchildren, William Dunn Jr of Dillon, Mrs Paul Judge of Missoula and R B Dunn of Ouray Colorado. A little girl Mrs Shive came to Montana from Illinois.
Jackson will host Sunday June 19 the thirteenth annual I O O F District No 8 meeting and the twenty fifth annual Rebekah District No. 8 meeting with attendees from Beaverhead Silver Bow and Deer Lodge counties. Local officers are listed for both organizations and Jackson Lodge No 81 and Sincerity Rebekah Lodge No 121 will host activities with special entertainment planned for the Rebekah district.
Diplomas and degrees were conferred on 100 candidates at the Montana State Normal College fortieth annual commencement in Bozeman. Dr. Alfred Atkinson delivered the address Present-Day Progress. The program included processional, invocations, chorus, diplomas by President Sheldon E. Davis, and degrees by Mr. George M. Gosman. Baccalaureate services followed with extensive graduates list.
Four ordinances approved regulate suspended signs beer and liquor sales and loading zones in Dillon. Sign permits require a drawing and a $1 fee. Beer penalties include 100 to 300 dollar fines and 30 to 90 days jail or both. licenses revoked on conviction. Passenger and freight loading zones established with ten minute parking on Glendale street by Andrus hotel side.
Ranchers in the Dell Lima district have started a grasshopper fight under a cooperative plan. County and federal agencies supply bait materials while ranchers cover mixing costs. Bait mixing runs in county yards at Lima. Ranchers are asked to locate hopper hatchings and report findings to Bernard F. Williams the county extension agent in Dillon. Last year grasshoppers were controlled with no crop losses reported.
Mary Dawn Warner was awarded the DAR Good Citizenship medal at Class Day exercises presented by Mrs. J. Fred Woodside, former state regent. Each state sends one girl to Washington as a guest of the National Society DAR, with medals awarded to all whose names reach the state conference in March for outstanding citizenship. Beaverhead county high School girls have equal chances alongside larger state schools.
Dillon Gun Club capped the Montana State Trapshoot with four titles and a 436 team score to win the team event over Sheridan. Ted Renfro won two titles including the doubles and all around while Emmett Simmons and Tom McMahan tied for the singles championship with 196 of 200. Other champions included W. E. Tallent and Mrs. A. J. Davis Jr. in various divisions as shooters from multiple states and Canada competed over the three day event.
The Wisdom Women’s club closed a harmonious year with morning and afternoon sessions in Wise River on May 22. Delegates reported to the County Federation, and the secretary was authorized to pay summer bills as refinishing of the library exterior begins next week. Twenty four members and guests enjoyed a luncheon served by Mrs. Don Francis, with American Beauty roses decorating the rooms. New officers were installed under Mrs. Eunice McKevitt’s presidency, including Mrs. Wallace Francis as president and Mrs. Ted Woodward as secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Jack Miller, first vice president, could not attend.
Dr. Robert E. Albright discussed early Montana Indians at the Rotary meeting. He noted that while major battles occurred in Montana, few Indians were involved, citing the Custer massacre as an example and explaining how treaties allowed uneasy coexistence until gold brought greater white influx.
