Two Dillon players Juck Gilbert and Bob Stephan reached final rounds at the state golf tournament in Anaconda last week. Gilbert won the junior title and reached amateur final. Stephan captured the seventh flight title. Other Dillon entrants included M Brundage, G Gosmann, W Hartwig, and W Gilbert. Pro John Merhar was among low scorers as Hank Merhar won the open. Rudy Merhar defeated Martin Kall for 1982 amateur honors.

Veterans May Get Loans by New Act
Act of July 21 authorizes loans to all adjusted service certificates with a 3 percent annual rate. Loans on certificates under two years old begin July 25 and are issued in order of applications to the Veterans Administration. Veterans should avoid inquiries after forwarding as processing will be expedited. Notes may be secured at American Legion or Red Cross HQs or from the Veterans Administration Fort Harrison Montana along with the certificate.

Old-Time Rancher of Big Hole Dies
William Woody, prominent Jackson rancher, died at Barrett hospital last Friday night after a brief illness. A Laurel Springs, North Carolina native born October 16, 1849, he moved to Beaverhead county in 1903 to operate a large Big Hole basin ranch. Survived by sons Robert and James Woody of Jackson and daughters Mrs. Harry Helming of Wisdom and Mrs. Dick of Jackson.

Smoking restrictions effective in forests
Supervisor A A Simpson of the local forestry department received a wire from the headquarters at Missoula stating that smoking restrictions within national forest boundaries become effective on July 28. After that date smoking will be absolutely prohibited except at established camps or in the forest reserve. infractions will be prosecuted. Persons in cars are prohibited from smoking while driving on forest roads.

Highway oiling to be completed on 130 mile Montana stretch
Montana highway commission announces August 18 letting to finish top coating and oiling of a 45 mile segment north of Armstead to the Idaho line. The project will complete an unbroken 130 mile route from Idaho to Crystal Springs mostly in Beaverhead county with $2.5 million planned for the year. Wages start at 50 cents an hour, with higher rates for skilled labor. board and room not to exceed $1 per day.

Renfro Wins Honors at Del Monte Shoot
E. W. Renfro of Dell excelled at the Pacific International shoot in Del Monte California. He totaled 197 of 200 to win the class A event and captured the singles championship in a shoot-off against Dr. H W Armstrong after both posted 198 birds. The Sunday dispatch rated Renfro as the second highest in the United States for registered trapshoots.

Professor Jordan to Take Leave of Year

Camp Fire Near Eureka Leads to 30 Day Sentence
July 10 Eureka patrolman Fred Clark found a spreading campfire near Eureka. He and Ranger R W Freming traced campers across the line into Canada. A member of the party Mathias Eneas of the group faces charges and a 30 day sentence.

Beaverhead county reduced its assessed valuation by 1,261,176 from last year, totaling 18,743,336. Five Men Held on Charge of Assault in Wisdom
Undersheriff Barry brought to Dillon five men held on $1000 bonds each after pleading not guilty in Jodie Opps court to third degree assault. The five John Jakovac Matt Jakovac Emil Jakovac Otis Lee and Mick Drngevic from Salmon allegedly attacked rancher Amos Ferris after a horse team dispute. Ferris drew a knife and wounded John Jakovac slightly. John was hospitalized as precaution. Trial set for August 5. Sheriff Orr reported restored order in Wisdom with a group of troublemakers sent away and others scattered among ranches.
