Beloved Dillon Matron Rebecca Erwin Dead at 78

Mrs Rebecca Jane Stewart Erwin widow of J G Erwin dies at family home on Thomson avenue after hip injury from a January fall. A Beaverhead county resident of 37 years, she came to Montana in 1902 from Kansas City. Survived by three sons, two daughters, two brothers, a sister and the late husband. Funeral held at Brundage chapel with interment at Mountain View Cemetery.

Championship of City Golf Club preliminaries set for match play

Draws made Monday night for the Dillon Country Club annual championship. Preliminaries decide entrants to the championship flight with winners advancing and scores posted in the clubhouse. Matches face off by Saturday evening with finals after eighteen holes of medal play.

Freak Lightning Bolt Startles Residents in Dillon Night

A freak bolt of lightning jolted residents shortly after 9 PM Monday in Dillon. A thunder crack followed the bright flash, with several people reporting a distinct shock of electricity though no injuries or structures were struck according to witnesses.

Word reaches Dillon of the July 4 death in Missoula of A R Jacobs from cerebral hemorrhage at his home. A former Dillon resident and early 1900s State Bank cashier, he married Edith Graves of Dillon. Survived by widow Mabel, two sons T R Jacobs and Randolph Jacobs, and daughter Marjorie Jacobs.

Gunners Triumph in Montana Trapshoot at Butte

In the state trapshoot finals at Butte Dillon added to its earlier wins. Herman Peterson placed runner-up in a shoot-off with 196 of 200. Ted Renfro of Dell won the doubles title and led Dillon in shoot-offs for teams. Peterson won Class A championship and the Sunday handicap with 98 of 100 from 24 yards. Renfro captured the state all around championship.

Salesman Penalized for Selling Real Estate Without License

L T Haggland of Seattle pleaded guilty in Judge George Opp's justice court to selling real estate without a license and was fined 65 dollars. Sheriff Paul Temple had arrested him and Roy King after ranchers reported they were selling chances on Puget Sound summer homes. King is held for Coleville authorities on a fraud charge.

Veterans to celebrate Gosman's election and post events

Beaverhead post of the American Legion will honor Commander C. J. Horen at retirement and install C. A. Bechler as new commander. The gathering will also celebrate George M. Gosman being elected state commander and delegates to the Livingston convention will report.

Heat Wave Continues With Rising Temperatures Across Region

The three day heat wave began Saturday with 91 degrees and climbs to 95 by Monday. People shed coats for shirtsleeves as cool drinks sell fast and children enjoy garden hoses. The 24 hour low Monday reached 54, five degrees above Sunday’s 94 high.

Dillon Moneyman Frank A Ha Dies After Bee Sting

Frank A Ha a leading Dillon business figure and former lieutenant governor of Montana died at his South Pacific street home after a bee sting. He collapsed minutes after noting his allergy and died within twenty minutes despite medical aid. Born May 15 1878 in Kansas he moved to Montana forty one years ago, became a rancher educator and long time Republican leader. He served as district court clerk in 1904 and was active in state farming and loan circles. The death is ruled an accidental allergic reaction to the sting.

Improvements Planned for Mountain View Cemetery

Local WPA workers will be hired soon to transform Mountain View cemetery into a garden. City engineer Forrest Bayerd announced a plan costing 20811 dollars, expanding work started by the Business and Professional Women's club. The project includes more irrigation pipes, a concrete reservoir, pump house, fences, an ornamental archway, and full landscaping.

Changes in Crop Insurance Program Highlighted by Officials

Beaverhead county agricultural committee chair Ferguson announced four major 1940 changes to the crop insurance program. The reforms include using AAA advances to cover premiums on winter and spring wheat, simplified application and notification requirements, a blended nine and 13 year base period, and special practices for new farming methods to better reflect reduced risk. The program, though experimental, protected over 5,300 Montana wheat farmers in its first year.

The Dillon public library reports a substantial rise in readers and borrowers with about 1,000 active borrowers and 12 048 volumes circulated in the year ending June 80. Gifts support the collection including money from the Shakespeare club and the American Association of University Women along with numerous book donations.

Tyro Heads Dillon Rotary for Coming Year

Frank H. Tyro was installed as president of the Dillon Rotary club for the ensuing year at a regular weekly meeting held Tuesday at the Andrus hotel. Kenneth Brown of Montana State Normal College spoke on fallacies in current logic and its practical consequences. Tyro began his duties, with C. L. Hovren as meeting chairman and Larry Peterson attending as a guest.
