Lincoln at Fort Stevens the Only President Under Fire
In July 1864 Abraham Lincoln stood on Fort Stevens parapets during a Confederate assault on Washington. General Wright led defenses while Lincoln watched, declined removal, and later recalled the perilous moment as Early’s attack failed and Washington was saved. A CCC footpath now marks the site with a bronze tablet recalling the event.
