Landowners liable for fires on their land under Montana statute

In Montana district court a case involved landowners failing to suppress fires during the summer. The law designates fires as a public nuisance and allows the state forester or forest service to extinguish fires at owner expense if not promptly controlled. The Cabinet National Forest sued the First State Bank of Thompson Falls after the bank refused to pay costs for a fire on its property, resulting in a judgment for the government.

Timber Cut in Northern Rocky Mountain National Forests

Six six million board feet of timber were cut in national forest lands in the Northern Rocky Mountain region from July 1 to December 31, 1936, with farm users adding nearly two million. Coeur d Alene and Kootenai forests produced the largest shares, while Montana east of the Continental Divide accounted for the bulk of farm-use timber. The stumpage rate for farm use is the cost of administration, and all harvesting aims to sustain annual yields.
