W A Clark gains another vote bringing him to 27 while ex Senator Power holds 15 in a deadlocked legislature. Bills introduced cover rail rate regulation, wild animal bounties, pulp mill tax exemptions, juror fees, fence and sole corp regulations, and a land agent payment. Limited action in both houses.
On the ballot Clark leads with 25 votes, Conrad 36, Toole 7, Fox 3, and others scattered. A recount of last election ballots in Flathead county was ordered to resolve whether Fred Whiteside or Mr. Geiger holds the upper house seat. Bills proposed include hospital funding, county officer supervision, school money apportionment, and Sunday business limits. Supreme Court rules AG may assist Lewis and Clark county in bribery grand jury inquiry.
In today’s session Clark gained two votes boosting his total to 29 while Metlen shifted from Toole to Maginnis and Conrad’s tally slipped to 83. Stanton announced a bill to abolish the supreme court reporter Hudson and to fix county officer fees. Anderson organized land title registration. In the house little was accomplished with bills introduced on bonds and surety company licensing and liquor sale on credit.
In Havena on January 20 the joint ballot for senator lists Conrad 32 Clark 29 Toole 5 Malone 15 Mantle 1 McGinnis 2 Fox 6 Hartman 2. Malone wins full Republican support as Day and Eversole are absent. Clark gains two votes from Gibson Madison and Walsh Gallatin. Gibson cites constituent wishes. Speakers include Garr defending his position and Kelly Silver Bow opposing Clark tactics. Conrad may swing toward Olark.
Plainfield resident Mrs Michael Curtain suffered a lung cold after a month of treatment by her family physician. Lima mourns the loss of Conductor Joseph Grant born 1871 in Marysville. Funeral held at the Masonic hall with Evergreen lodge A F and A M presiding. Visiting Masons from Pocatello Dubois Redrock and Dillon attended. All schools and business places closed in tribute.

Alex Metzel born January 14 1835 in York Pennsylvania who built a fortune from humble beginnings through cattle and horse raising in Montana after earlier ventures in Iowa and Colorado He served in the Montana legislature 1892 to 1894 and as state senator 1894 to 1898 later affiliated with Silver Republicans and led the county Republican committee.
