Western states seek reform of highway funding terms

Chief Engineer Pratt of the Montana highway commission says the Bankhead bill would allot 600 million for highways with Montana's share near 12 million if state cooperation matches federal needs. Western officials favor changing the basis from dollar for dollar to population per square mile, potentially cutting Montana’s co operation from 50 to about 26 percent and saving roughly 8 million. The Salt Lake City meeting followed Chicago discussions by the American Association of State Highway Officials to define policy for Congress.
