District tourney opens here in Dillon this week
Dillon hosts the district hoop tourney with eight teams entering. First games tonight at the Normal College gym pit stronger squads against weaker quintets, leading to finals with heightened interest and closer competition. The eight matchups include Lima versus Ennis and Virginia City versus Twin Bridges.

Debate Tryouts At Beaverhead County High School
Four students Harold Wheat Jack Reeves Eldon Noble and James McCulley won the Beaverhead County high school debate tryouts held Thursday evening at the high school. Bob Reeves earned honorable mention with Rosa Lee Brown Sigfred Johnson and Bob Forsgrent also competing. Judges John Collins T F McFadden and Dr R E Albright praised the arguments as spirited. The four winners will debate later this month to decide which two represent the county in the March tournament in Butte with Butte Anaconda and Dillon participating. Boulder and Bozeman did not enter this year.

Vets Plan to Carry On Junior Baseball in Dillon
Bea verhead post of the American Legion held a Thursday meeting at city hall to discuss continuing the junior baseball program. Action launched two years ago showed progress with promising players and a first string team, though fan support was weak. A post building project was also discussed with data being gathered for the plan.

Bannack Miner Is Killed by Cave-In
Raymond L. Turner aged 25 was killed in a Bannack mine cave-in at 9 p.m. on Saturday. His brother William Turner suffered a fractured skull and other injuries, and Smith Paddock sustained severe bruises but all were moved to Barrett hospital. Paddock heard the rockfall and warned the two miners as the slide occurred during their first shift at the Homska mine.

Former Dillon official William E. Stephenson dies at 79
William E Stephenson known as Steve died at his South Washington home after a lingering illness. Born August 24 1870 in Lincoln Illinois he moved to Dillon over 25 years ago. He served as clerk of the district court from 1920 to 1924 and later worked as a bookkeeper at Union Electric. A former second baseman he became a respected umpire and civic leader in Dillon. He leaves a widow and eastern relatives. Funeral at 2 PM Thursday at the Masonic hall with interment in Mountain View cemetery.

Herman Peterson of this city defeated top trapshooters in St Petersburg Florida by breaking 95 of 100 blue targets to win the handicap event. Mark Airie and R C Coffey each hit 94 to tie for second, with Peterson also placing second high overall for the meet.

John Kruger well known Grasshopper rancher died at Barrett hospital after a long illness. A native of Germany born February 24 1860 he came to the U S and was naturalized in 1906. He lived in the county since 1908 and is survived by a son Carl and daughters Mrs Chas Hignight Mrs Olga Shure and Mrs Clara Dutman plus nephews William and Adolph Pahnish. A meat cutting and canning demonstration led by I M C Anderson and Francis Smith drew 65 attendees in Dillon last Saturday at Beaverhead county high school home science.
