Montana records lowest death rate in state history
Provisional 1938 vital statistics show births at 8,684 a drop from 1932 and infant mortality at 49.0 per 1000 live births. Deaths totaled 5,194 with a rate of 90 per 1000, the lowest in 28 years except four prior instances. Homicides reached a record low and causes of death shifted as tuberculosis declined while heart disease and cancer remained leading killers.

Graduation Census Shows Montana Normal Alumni Reach
A Montana State Normal College study finds 1149 of 5609 state teaching positions are held by graduates. Alumni teach in every county, with Silver Bow leading at 150, Cascade 41, and Beaverhead 31. About 700 graduates live in Montana but do not teach. The assembly program featured Janet Aldrich and the Gargoyle club performed Such a Day.

Miners Short Course Enrollment Expected in City
A large enrollment is expected for the mining and prospectors short course opening Feb 12. Pearl I Smith secretary of the Beaverhead Mining association says the course is open to non members. Instructors from the State School of Mines Butte will teach at the high school with enrollment through Smith or Louis Schmittroth.

Legislators Speak At Rotary Meeting In Dillon
Montana lawmakers Senator George M. Melton and Representative B. J. Metlen addressed the Dillon Rotary Club at the Metlen hotel. Metlen reviewed session bills focused on emergency relief and noted savings from the CWA program cutting state relief costs about 750,000 dollars. Father of Terry Browning Passes in Ogden
J. W. Browning, 83, father of Terry Browning of this city, died at his Ogden Utah home after a lingering illness. He was a Tennessee native who moved west to Utah as a young man and worked in mining. Survived by two daughters Ruby and Florence Browning and two sons Ray of Ogden and Terry of this city. Terry left for Ogden Thursday evening for the funeral held Sunday.
