William H. Spearin died at Barrett Hospital after a months long decline. Born March 7 1856 in Maine he moved to Dillon in 1883 and owned west side property. Survived by a sister in Maine and in laws in Missouri. body likely shipped to Unionville for burial beside his wife.
Beaverhead Post of the American Legion will hold a regular meeting Thursday evening at the Medlen hotel with a 7 o clock dinner. Past commanders will give talks about their years heading the post. Dinner price 50 cents. Commander Parke T. Scott from Armstead Montana announced.
Mrs Fratie Stone departed Wednesday to Helena due to the death of Roy Settles, an longtime former resident of the city.
Normal College Bulldogs built a 44 19 lead by halftime and rolled to a 68 41 victory over Inter mountain Union. Bates Van degrift and Rouse starred for the Bulldogs while Brandford led the Panthers with 15 points and Lyman added 14. Substitutes played in the second half as the outcome was effectively settled.
Grace, president of the Bethlehem Steel corporation, states in Friday views that the first quarter earnings will be cheerful. He anticipates improving business conditions and an optimistic outlook for the nation, suggesting a faster recovery than many expect.
Francis L Thibideau, a World War II veteran and Dillon resident born January 17 1896 in Spearfish SD, died at his parents’ home on Kentucky avenue after a lingering illness. He served overseas after enlisting in 1917 in Butte. Survived by widow and two children Ethel and Jack, parents, two sisters, and three brothers. Funeral was held Wednesday at St James Episcopal church with burial at Mountain View cemetery.
J. W. Walters of the Walters Garage received one of the new Willys 77 cars Wednesday drawing a large crowd. The streamlined all steel body reduces wind resistance and features floating power to cut vibration. Walters notes the car will achieve 25 to 80 miles per gallon and reach speeds of 70 miles per hour.
The charity hall dance at city hall Saturday night, organized by the Dillon fire department, drew a large crowd. It cleared about $65 to be donated to Associated Charities for local relief work.
Mothers and daughters and fathers and sons enjoyed Friday events under the Dillon Parent-Teachers association. The high school gym hosted a lively program with community singing, a town and school skit, and a finale featuring a magician and rejuvenating machine. Participants included Mrs. George Gosman and Helen Randolph among others.
Dillon residents packed the courthouse to back a federal building project. J J Fitzgerald outlined a $90 000 appropriation and 60 day start while eight proposed sites were listed. A standing vote showed strong local support with several officials and citizens pledging backing and a $100 subscription to help secure a site.
January issue of the Normal College Index focuses on elementary school grades with tips for teachers in grades 4 through 6. Features include play production by F Ryerson and C Clements and a Gargoyle try-outs comedy with a cast from Great Falls, Deer Lodge, and Fairview. An alumni dinner at the Country Inn and plans for the operetta Maid in Japan proceeding with leads from Great Falls are noted, with March 10 set for the operetta.
Charles McFarlin long a Wisdom resident and later a Dillon confectionery operator died in Reno Nevada. He had moved to California and Nevada and is survived by his wife and two sons Alfred of Los Angeles and George of Monrovia Calif. The family was with him at his passing.
Dillon Rotary discussed federal relief funds for Montana with A. Bergeson chairing and visitors including J. Fuller and A. Simpson. Beav erhead county received 5000 for January and February to buy supplies. workers receive benefit through orders rather than cash. Sam Wilkinson outlined apportionment. W. Hartwig noted insurance costs and community support amid high aid applications. Inventory of the late Mrs Kate Mooney estate filed in district court.
Paul N. Campbell scout executive visited Butte last week for a two day program. He met with Roy Forrester J C Wedum and local troops to discuss the coming Boy Scout week February 8 to 14. Highlights include inter troop meeting court of honor and scout father banquet with invitations to Lima Scouts.
Mrs Lotta Goforth wife of Ralph Goforth died Saturday morning at Barrett hospital after a long illness. A Calina Ohio native born in 1891 she moved to Armstead about twelve years ago and leaves two daughters and her Maine-resident mother. Funeral at Brundage chapel Monday with Rev J A Meeke of Grace Methodist officiating. Interment Mountain View.
In Butte last Saturday evening the Beavers and Central battled to a 13-12 defeat for Dillon. Central previously beat the Beavers 22-21, both close defensive contests with guard Ritschel and Exum high scorers, while Twin Bridges upset Dillon 29-26 the night before.
