Cupid Falls Short of 1936 Marriage Record

Beav erhead county marriage records show 142 licenses issued this year, 24 fewer than 1936, with June and October the peak months. Dillon attracted 25 couples, giving Idaho its Gretna Green status. Youngest bride 17, oldest 55. list includes couples from Dillon, Armstead, Rexburg, Butte, Sheridan and more.

Elk to be planted in Dillon area by local sportsmen

Beaverhead Sportsmen's association prepares to receive about 100 elk from Yellowstone district. Trap sites near Gardiner. trucks provided by the association. Funds from last winter cover expenses. Easements secured in Sheep Canyon east of Dillon for release. first shipments expected soon after the new year.

Three Range Inspectors Appointed for 1937 Program

Beaverhead county agricultural conservation committee appoints W. J. Neidt to supervise Grasshopper valley and Big Hole basin range inspection. Sylvester P. Meade and Irving Orr, both of Dillon, also named to cover Dell district and Dillon Reichle districts. All operators must finish range practices by year end. Orr has completed much surveying and mapping. reports will be sent to Bozeman, with crop payments expected in January.

Yuletide Is Featured by Happy Events

Dillon residents enjoyed a quiet Christmas with church services caroling and family gatherings. Girl Scout and Brownie carolers visited Barrett hospital and the county farm, led by Mrs. Russell Bacon. St James and First Lutheran hosted services with pageants and a December 25 dance by the Beaverhead American Legion.

Bad Hombre Fined in Judge Stahl Court

Bob Hayner pleaded guilty to drunk and disorderly conduct and was fined $30 by Judge Louis Stahl. His brother Jim was arraigned on the same charges and fined $10. Both await sentencing in the county jail if fines are not paid. Barbara Clark, a DuBois high school student, is visiting her mother Mrs. Paul Cash for the holidays and will return after New Year.

Albert Metzel Dies at Ruby Ranch Home

Louis Albert Metzel, a Madison county ranchman, died of a heart attack at his ranch home near Ruby. Born July 8 1875 on the old York ranch, he lived in Montana most of his life except nine years in Canada. He was a Montana State College graduate, a Mason Shriner and early Elks member. Funeral services were held at the Masonic temple in Virginia City.

Cars Collide Near Reichle Last Week

Two cars owned by Matt Polish of Reichle and Hyman S. Finesilver of Seattle were badly damaged three miles north of Reichle. No injuries reported. Polish headed south while Finesilver went toward Butte. Finesilver’s wheel came off and the car left the road into a ditch. Highway Patrolman Robert Wright investigated. Mrs Agnes Garrison and Ralph Quigley of Dell were visiting Dillon.

Time March of Time Senate passes farm bill and wage debates

Washington reports the Senate sent the Pope McGill Farm Bill to conference while the House moved to kill the Black Connery Wage and Hours bill by sending it back to committee. A Ludlow antiwar referendum petition gained support as Congress adjourned for holidays. Albany notes state minimum wage laws vary and DC budgets estimate living costs for working women, showing wide gaps with actual wages in New York.

Stork Ahead of Grim Reaper in Statistics Plan Mineral Exhibit

Beaverhead county officials outline plans to showcase Montana mining at the 1939 San Francisco and New York world fairs. John Collins is authorized to form a committee to coord­inate specimens for storage and cataloging. A monument is planned at the Argenta site of the first Montana smelter. The Beaverhead Mining association also seeks affiliation with the Montana Mining association and coordination with Dillon Chamber of Commerce for a summer convention. The report also notes Beaverhead births and deaths for the year, with 75 births and 66 deaths, listing several specific individual birth records.

Mizpah Chapter OES Installs New Officers

Mrs. Florence Stone presided as Mizpah Chapter No. 13 OES installed the newly elected officers after a regular meeting. Elizabeth H. Luebben led as installing officer with J. Fred W. Woodside as grand marshal. DeMolays and Rainbow girls escorted. New officers include Florence Stone as matron and Earl Fairbanks as patron, with several appointed officers named and installed. Refreshments followed the ceremony.

Beavers Rated As Contenders Of First Rank

Beavers of Beaverhead county high school emerge as top contenders for state and district honors as the Dillon Beavers close the 1938 basketball schedule with a February district tournament. They defeat Anaconda high 34 to 20 after a tight 8 to 8 start, with Cashmore and Burgess benched late due to fouls and all starters scoring.
