A rapid weather shift Monday dropped Beaverhead valley temperatures from 58 above to 18 below in hours. The cold snap, marked by a few inches of snow, left residents scrambling for coal and warm clothing as forecasts predicted the cold would persist into today or tomorrow.
Four men named George A. Mostert F. M. DeKay J Lear and Charles Lyons were arrested by sheriff deputies as suspicious. They pleaded guilty to vagrancy and each received ten days in the county jail. They had ridden from California seeking work and were stranded by cold weather. DeKay’s feet were frostbitten. A separate man found on a train at Spencer rode to Dillon during the freezing weather.
The Dillon Sportsmen's Association, noted for a second-place finish in the predatory bird and animal drive and a $100 prize, considers sending delegates to the December 28 and 29 joint meeting of the Montana Sportsmen's Association and the State Game and Fish Commission in Helena to present local conditions and learn the interpretation of game laws.
The Normal college basketball team beat the Twin Bridges Independents 20 to 5 in their opening game last Friday under Coach Hollister. Early January slated games will pit them against other state collegiate teams.
Fred Rife appoints Walter Stamm as deputy in the district court clerk’s office. Stamm is a capable young accountant, well qualified, a native Dillon boy and member of the American Legion.
Mildred Woodworth ten year old daughter of Mrs T G Woodworth died at home on South Atlantic street Monday night from suspected spinal meningitis after an illness of under 24 hours. Doctors could not save her. She was a bright pupil at the Normal college. Survived by two sisters, mother and a Somers father. Remains shipped to Coeur d Alene Idaho for funeral.
In the U S death rate rose to 12 8 per 1 000 in 1928 from 11 08 in 1922 Mortality data show only seven of forty eight states had lower rates than in 1922 Colorado Idaho Montana Oregon South Carolina Utah and Washington listed among the lower rates Maryland registered the highest rate at 14 2 Montana posted the lowest at 8 7 per 1 000.
Edwin Gleed an old time ranchman long time Beaverhead county resident died Friday at his ranch after a brief illness. Born in Cardiff Wales he came to America as a youth and settled in Beaverhead in the early 1880s. Survived by his wife two daughters two brothers Henry Gleed of Dillon and Ed Gleed of Lima and several nephews Funeral services were held Monday at Melrose.
A visitor from Mexico was found shivering on a street corner and taken to the county jail on a wag charge. He was furnished clothing and a bath, thawed enough to speak, and said he came in on the morning freight. He wore only overalls shirt coat and worn shoes with frostbitten feet.
Judge Joseph C. Smith retires January 1 and partners with Attorney J E Kelly. The new firm Smith and Kelly will open shortly after year’s start, located in the Poindexter block. Smith practiced law in Dillon for years before becoming judge. Kelly arrived over a year ago to succeed E J Calloway. both are well known in Beaverhead and Madison counties.
Eileen Grimes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Grimes, was badly burned on her hands and arms after falling against a hot stove last Monday. Prompt treatment is expected to reduce scarring and the child is said to be recovering well today.
In Bannack's early mining era cattle and sheep industries grew as settlers moved west. James M. Mann is credited with founding the cattle trade. Utah Texas and other states supplied herds. Cattle companies formed, ranges expanded, and the industry shifted to ranching with improved methods. Sheep export volume rose, with Merino flocks arriving from California and other states. Graduating exercises held in the Normal college auditorium for the first division class of 1925. Names include Maude Morrow Appleyard, Bernice Babb, Anastacia Boger, June Clapton, and others. Rev. Ernest E. Loft offered invocation and benediction. Diplomas presented by Frank Eliel. Performances by mixed chorus and instrumental ensembles.
Mrs. T. J. Morrow and her daughter departed Thursday for La tham Washington home following her father the late A. Barshaw death in the city they left.
The George Clemow ranch house in the Big Hole basin burned down in the afternoon with the family away. Cause thought to be an overheated stove or faulty flue. Loss substantial, partly insured, with personal effects burned and the family left in their clothing. Community sympathy extended to the Clemenns.
Christmas spirit noted across all Methodist Church services on Sunday December 21. Highlights include special music, Sunday school at 10, public worship at 11 with a pastor sermon, noon men’s Bible class, Epworth League at 6 30, and a 7 30 public service followed by a Christmas program by the Sunday school on Tuesday evening December 23 at 7 80.
Graeter Grocery Co of Dillon purchased the stock and fixtures of Leader Cash Grocery, formerly run by Martin Sorenson on North Montana Street. The transfer occurred this week, expanding Graeter’s merchandise. The store is now operated by B. N. Stevenson and Walter Vance.
A small blaze at the Dew Drop Inn on Idaho Street was extinguished last night after a suspected short circuit. Firefighters checked smoldering embers and found no damage or injuries.
A. C. Vachon of the Dillon Sportsmen's Association reports that Dillon club won second prize in the predatory bird and animal campaign. The drive yielded 36 000 points, with a $100 prize for aiding in exterminating magpies crows owls hawks gophers coyotes and other pests. First place winner was not announced.
In a fast opening game at the high school gymnasium the Dillon Independents defeated the DeMolays 15 to 13. DeMolays guards Dell Lloyd and Warren Murray led with Will Nelson at center while Independents guards were Ryburn and Andrus and Price held center. Substitutes Hughes Paddock Sweeney and Slack also played.
The B. C. H. S. basketball team left Friday morning to play the first game of the season in Salmon, Idaho.
