New Brass Band Idea Emerges From Legion Meeting

The American Legion in city discussions weighs forming a new 35 piece band with members owning instruments. A band would be hired or run under Legion control depending on costs and city use, with plans to present a report later. Dances planned for Christmas and New Year at City Hall will cost one dollar plus a ten cent war tax.

Bound Over to District Court in Mil ler Beats Case

Alleged to have aided Fred Gillman in slaughtering a Miller Development beef animal in the Big Hole Basin, Poindexter and Morris were bound over to the district court after arraignment in justice court. Gillman was convicted and paroled after a 2 to 6 year sentence. Bonds set at 2000 dollars each remain unfurnished.

Mexicans Held on Charge of Passing Bad Checks

Two men using aliases J. W. Lee and Jim Lonzora were jailed after attempting to pass bogus checks on Dillon merchants. They allegedly used forged names Cross and Hades and paid with checks at Hughes McCaleb and Niblack clothing. Authorities say the full fraud scheme targets other towns, with possible warrants in Butte.

Census takers sought for Beaverhead county decennial census

Beaverhead county needs census takers starting January 1 for the Fourteenth Decennial Census. Both men and women aged 18 to 70 may apply, earning $4 to $6 per day. Apply now to William A. Bucher of Beaverhead Abstract Co. on East Bannack Street. Service men favored in selection.

Funeral for pioneer farmer Christopher L Worth

Under the Odd Fellows lodge he belonged to, the funeral for Christopher L Worth was held at the Methodist church. He died of pneumonia at his ranch near Dillon at age forty nine after a week of illness, and was buried at Mountain View cemetery. Worth, a former Butte barber turned dry land farming innovator, helped pioneer grain crops on beach land and in 1914 yielded the county’s largest Turkey Red wheat crop.

Heavy Tax Payers List Dominates Beaverhead County Revenues

Tax collections in Beaverhead County exceed 450000 with the Oregon Short Line contributing a major share. The delinquent total drops after accounting for the Big Hole Ir rigation Association, while 72 taxpayers owe 1000 or more and 227 pay 250 to 1000. The heaviest taxpayers list includes Oregon Short Line, P. and O. Livestock Co., First National Bank of Dillon, John Peterson, and the William Montgomery estate.

Old Grasshopper road kept open pending final change

A county board decision keeps the upper Grasshopper road open until a planned change is completed, with a fence built on both sides at a cost shared by the county. The project must be finished by June 15, 1920, and stockmen in the Grasshopper area divide over the issue while other county actions are noted.

Lawrence Price a Dillon youth and U S Navy sailor writes of nearly three years in service. He spent the last year in the North Sea with a squadron of mine sweepers and expects discharge in time to spend Christmas holidays at home. He cruised globally and authored narratives about sailor life that appeared in eastern newspapers with favorable response.

Beaverhead County Ends Duck and Deer Seasons Early

After a hard hunting season with many hunters, the duck season ended last Sunday. The big game season runs to Christmas in Beaverhead county where the deer season also closed. Elk hunting remains open until Christmas, a point many huntsmen regret.

Pled Guilty in Liquor Case Faces Fine and Jail

William Carter and Frank Kingsbury pled guilty in justice court to violating the liquor law. They were fined twenty five dollars and ten days in jail as punishment.

City Auto Owners Enrich Treasury

Dillon city officials reported automobile owners paid the heaviest share to the monthly fund as a gauge of the crime wave. The council discussed a potential city band, a new sewer district for California and South Dakota streets to be built next spring, and the purchase of 600 feet of fire hose approved by the water commissioner.

The trustees meet Tuesday at 8 pm in the county superintendent’s office. A Friday and Saturday carnival is planned as the student body focus. The Thanksgiving game closed the season with strong, valuable experience though finances were weak.
