Martin Barrett a Montana pioneer and Barrett memorial hospital donor died at his home on South Pacific street last Saturday evening after a year of illness. Born February 2 1840 in Ireland he came to America with his family in 1847 and later built a vast ranching fortune in Beaverhead County. His death follows the passing of his wife Mrs Barrett about 18 months ago. Barrett’s life spanned early territorial progress and he was a noted benefactor to the community through the hospital bearing his name.
Beaverhead county spectators enjoyed a strong fight card at Dell under the American Legion. Earl Butner defeated Schlegal in a quick decisive win, while Downing of Dell beat an opponent in six rounds and John Butner Jr. took victory over Stephens of Dillon in the preliminaries. An obituary notes the death of Frank Landon, a prominent Montana sheep rancher born in Ontario in 1852 who built a large, respected operation on Blacktail Creek and helped finance regional ventures.
Montana and federal agriculture officials forecast a record wheat harvest of 72 696 000 bushels, about 20 million above the previous record. Autumn and spring yields are high with 18.3 and 18.9 bushels per acre, totaling 82 fixed figures, and the state would surpass its five year average by roughly 15 million bushels.
