Golf fans saw a film presentation at the Dillon Country Club as local figures Turner and Adams hosted twenty members to view slow motion golf instruction. The evening included praise for the Dillon club’s new course with strong greens and promising prospects for state leadership.
Residents of Beaverhead county mourn the death of Dr R H Ryburn a longtime community physician who died by a self inflicted gunshot at his White block office last Friday afternoon. The event shocked neighbors and colleagues who recall his 30 years of service and generous ethics.
Harry Andrus and George Ditty plan one of the finest meets in years at the fair grounds August 25 to 27. Entries from Reno and other inquiries arrive as purses of 800 and 250 attract attention. Local owners prep fast horses and large crowds from Idaho and Dillon are expected to attend.
Enthusiasm grows for a Dillon flower show September 2 and 3 under Dillon Rotary Club auspices. Hundreds expect prizes for best flowers and vegetables as Verona Metlen opens her block for the event with ample room for booths and a crowd.
Beaverhead County commissioners and Acting Clerk Albert S. Baker met as a board of equalization in Dillon at 9 a.m. on Monday August 8 1927. Members A L Anderson O C Gusman and J J Shaw adjourned at 11 a.m and reconvened at 4 p.m to continue the 1927 tax levy after reviewing petitions including Joseph Stefanics for a reduction which was denied.
Yellowstone statistics show Montana tops state travel to the park in 1927 with 3 296 cars and 11 060 passengers. California, Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming follow, with visitors also arriving from Alaska Canada Mexico and international regions.
The Dillon Rotary Club met Wednesday noon with de TR De Curry as chairman. Speaker A. W. Stephenson, pilot of Miss Dillon, gave an engaging talk on local aeronautics and the upcoming New York to Spokane air route project.
A steer owned by W D Sandy climbed to the top of an engine room and fell through a roof at the abandoned Smallhorn Oil plant in Smallhorn Cariyon. Mr and Mrs E A Spiller visited the site and entered the engine room, encountering the distressed animal and prompting a rescue effort.
A badger in the City Baking company alley entertained a large crowd for ten minutes as it fought with an Airedale owned by Louis Schmittroth. The animals clashed amid a no dull moment exhibition before the badger, brought in by a Mexican section hand, slipped away the next morning.
Jacob Spitzmiller a longtime Dillon resident died Friday morning at Barrett Hospital after a weeklong illness. Born February 19 1865 in Evansville Indiana he lived in Dillon about 30 years working on ranches in Centennial valley and later here He traveled to visit relatives in the east recently and leaves siblings in Indiana with his Kansas brother Max Spitzmiller arriving to arrange burial in Evansville Indiana.
Browne and two passengers, Miss Cora Simonsen and Frank Mast, died when Browne's Waco plane crashed after takeoff near Polson. The pilot survived with minor injuries as the craft wrecked in the Flathead river.
The Normal college announces the largest August graduating class with 17 diploma recipients. Commencement exercises are set for Wednesday morning, with President H J Davis delivering the address and Vice President Lee Ro Light presenting diplomas to graduates including Ralph McFadden in the music department and the girls’ quartet.
In Helena the state fish and game commission declared a closed season on all upland game birds due to poor hatch and depletion concerns. Ducks and geese will be the only game birds available to Montana hunters this year. The decision followed a detailed investigation led by Chairman Thomas and Board members with input from Missoula’s N Marlowe and Game Warden Robert Hill.
