The Dillon Chautauqua week pleased the public with an excellent lineup from Paramount Marimba Band to the Robin Hood opera. Lectures entertained and instructed, with concerts spanning classics to popular airs. Attendees applauded, notes of deficit for next year mentioned, and calls for continued service.
T. Lee McCracken came back Wednesday from an extended buying trip to eastern markets. He was met at Whitehall by Mrs. McCracken and J. W. Evans in a car. The couple and Mr. and Mrs. Evans then left Friday for Bozeman to attend the roundup.
Hon Frank Eliel and Walter Jones traveled to Bozeman to attend the rodeo. Eliel, a Republican candidate for Congress, also toured Montana State College buildings as members of the State Board of Education.
Hugh Dart is back from a vacation trip to the eastern part of the state, resuming local duties and reporting plans.
The county board met with all members present approving routine bills. J B Holtz gained permission to shift a proposed pipeline route south of a county road. L G Price may build a culvert on Sheep Creek road. The county attorney can appoint assisting counsel during the district court term. An order released Security State Bank and bondsmen from 105000. Ritchie requested a road to ranch property in Centennial Valley. Gosman to investigate. County nurse Angot Lian requested hospital bills for indigent children. request granted. The board adjourned at noon.
Dr. R. D. Curry, driving home about 10 pm on South Idaho street, struck a brick wagon with a missing wheel left in the road. The impact tore the hood and damaged the car engine, but Curry escaped with only minor scratches. visibility and a warning lantern may have helped prevent the accident.
A 1924 table from the Fraternal Monitor shows management cost per $1000 for 25 large old line firms at 4.25 dollars while 25 leading fraternal societies report 1.40 dollars per 106. Old line firms hold over 27 billion in force, fraternal societies over 6 billion. Total 1923 income 1.238 billion for old line groups with 27 percent paid in benefits. fraternal income 141.9 million with 58 percent paid in benefits.
Washington announces 100,000,000 pounds of pyrotol from World War supplies will be distributed via state agencies for land clearing and highway work. No direct farmer delivery. state agricultural colleges will pool orders and arrange carload shipments to lower freight costs.
The Montana case against Clarence L Williams began in a district court special session with jury selection. Witnesses described the shooting of George Harrison and Williams arrest while Williams claimed to seek counsel and offered his account of his life before testifying on his own behalf.
The Normal College will hold August graduation for 42 seniors on August 18 in the college auditorium, bringing total graduates this year to 141 across June March and December classes. Names listed include Alma Abramson Julia Arthur Rose Barrett Ruth Bennett Chloe Brownfield Leona Carney Vera Cellars Alma Cloyd and 34 others.
Dillon Rotarians hosted a regular luncheon featuring Ralph Bingham the Philadelphia humorist and Ernest Gamble of the Gamble Concerts. Bingham contrasted Rotary and Chautauqua in uplifting communities while delivering sketches that drew laughter. Gamble shared travel experiences as Fred Huber chaired the program.
Three Dillon women Miss Constance Barrett Miss Nancy Barrett and Miss Helen Bulger were in a Ford sedan that failed brakes on a steep grade six miles west of Boulder Sunday afternoon. Nancy Barrett suffered multiple fractured ribs and a badly sprained back while Constance Barrett had facial cuts. Bulger escaped unscathed. They were taken to St. James hospital in Butte for care after a passing motorist aided the group.
T D Olmsted, candidate for railroad commissioner, touring the northern state last week had his new Ford runabout stolen at Missoula. Police conducted a thorough search but could not recover the vehicle.
Mr and Mrs Morton Elliott returned from a motor trip to Belgrade and through the Gallatin valley.
Charles Retallack former Dillon police officer was arrested Monday afternoon in Saginaw Michigan after fleeing arrest for a grave crime against a 1 year old girl. Undersheriff Kellum left for extradition papers, and Sheriff Mooney believes he is the suspect. Hugh Chambers O D Russell Jack Howard and William Schlagle face trial in the current district court session.
J Murphy was brought from the Big Hole basin and pleaded guilty to an assault charge before Justice Phillips. He was sentenced to sixty days in the county jail for pulling a razor on Dunlap after a heated argument at the Carl Huntley ranch where both men were employed.
Mr. G. A. Tuckfield, inventor of a fish screen to conserve fish and keep them from entering irrigating ditches, demonstrates the wheel in the rear of the high school in Dillon. State Game Warden C A Jackaways will inspect. he challenges obstruction by floating objects. Montana may adopt the device statewide.
Bennett was arrested in Butte last Saturday morning on a theft complaint from the local sheriff’s office. He allegedly drove off with a car owned by C. RB Johnson of Wisdom and was bound over to district court on $2,000 bond after pleading not guilty. He borrowed the vehicle to go to Jackson but took it to Butte instead and was returned to Dillon by Undersheriff Kellum.
C. S. Doak, longtime local manager of Mountain States Telephone, was promoted and left for Dillon on Wednesday. Friends here regret his departure but celebrate the new position and wish him success. Mrs. Doak and family will move once a house is found.
A huge oleander in full bloom covers the entire front of Jack Porter’s soft drink place on Bannack street. The profuse flowering plant draws much attention and admiration as one of the city’s most beautiful plants, with scores of large pink blossoms.
The County Fair Association and Board of County Commissioners meet to plan a three day event next month in Dillon. A new enclosed arena inside the race track will protect spectators and keep animals off the field while a rope of rodeo stunts and racing bills entertain crowds. Cash prizes will reward ranchers and exhibitors as booths are prepared in the exhibit hall, with farmers invited to compete and attend. Butte, August 1. Sellers Largey aged 19, became the youngest person in the United States to secure a $100,000 life insurance policy yesterday. He is the eldest son of Pat Largey who was murdered here about two years ago and left a large mining estate to his widow and children.
Elwood Peterson was taken from a north bound passenger train Monday afternoon. A search at the sheriff's office revealed a revolver allegedly taken from coworker Carroll at the John West ranch on Horse Prairie.
