Largest Class In History Of College
The 1924 graduating class at the Normal college is the largest in the history of the institution with 141 members. Graduates come from across Montana and beyond with many from Silver Bow and Cascade counties. 95 have teaching experience. Commencement was August 18 with Dr. Robert Line delivering the address and diplomas conferred by Chancellor M A Brannon. Honor students include 28 names across multiple towns in Montana.

Children Parade Dazzles In Colorful Junior Chautauqua
The Junior Chautauqua parade last Saturday afternoon drew a large crowd in Dillon as children in elaborate and comical costumes rode on horseback bikes trikes toy wagons and walked. Dorothy McCully won first prize in a tissue paper sweet pea costume while Fred Wolf took second with a tabby cat in a cage. Ray Ashworth of Butte visited Dillon friends Sunday.

Rotarians Welcome Normal College Men at Luncheon
The Dillon Rotary Club hosted about 15 faculty members and 50 male students from the State Normal College at a noon luncheon. Chancellor Brannon and professors spoke on Montana education, public instruction, forestry, and athletic prospects, noting a new gym and strong football and basketball outlook.

Longtime Modern Woodmen member L P Allen dies at 91
L P Allen aged 91 and oldest Modern Woodman in memory, predated J C Root. He led Deposit New York Courier in 1860 supporting Lincoln, served as Civil War postmaster in Deposit, printed at Clinton for decades, and was among Clinton Daily Herald publishers. Root joined Allen in 1882 to seal the first ritual.

A fierce blaze in Leodore Idaho last Saturday night consumed six Main and Railroad streets structures, estimated loss about 15000 with only 500 insurance for the block. Firemen and residents struggled to prevent spread as cause remains undetermined.

Aged man James Gbzo ne takes own life at Wise River dam
The 12 year caretaker of the dam at the Montana Power reservoir Wise River, James Gbzo ne, was found dead by his daughter Mrs F L Rhodes last Sunday afternoon. A high powered rifle wound pierced his heart. Coroner James Phillips of Dillon investigated and reported Osborne had obtained the rifle at about 4 PM and walked a short distance before shooting himself.

Despondent invalid dies in ill health in county
The man, in his second year, had been an invalid for some time due to ill health. He left a daughter and two sons, including Ben Osborne a forest ranger, one son living in Butte. His body was moved to Butte for a Wednesday funeral with interment at Dewey cemetery.

Tony Christensen, herder for the Spring Creek Sheep Company, was fined $10 and costs by Justice of Peace Stahl on charges brought by Assistant Forest Supervisor C. P. Fickes for leaving camp fires on public domain near Lakeview. The fires endangered National Forest lands.

Grand View Hay Growers Meet Sees Large Alfalfa Crop
Grand View Valley hay growers estimate about 45 000 tons of alfalfa will be harvested this year. W O Scofield, chair, notes ample water along the Snake River and a crop near average quality despite dry weather. The valley’s winter feed grounds have plenty of water and the region is highlighted as a premier Northwest feeding area. Mr and Mrs J F McBaine left for Ypsilanti Michigan to spend the intermission between semesters at the Normal college.

Beaverhead County Fair Opens With Ringling Features
Plans for the Dillon Beaverhead fair September 4 5 and 6 include Ringling horses rodeo cattle Firpo bull and riders from Butte Bitterroot and across the country. Purse total 5000 with contests in riding roping bull dogging and horse racing plus livestock exhibits and nightly dances. County officials report tax levies and equalization details for 1924 with various funds and district rates.

Four Get Prison Terms One Is Acquitted
The State versus William Schlagle verdict finds not guilty on insufficient evidence after 40 minutes of deliberation. Jack Howard pleads guilty and receives two to four years. Hugh Chambers is convicted and sentenced to two to four years. O D Russell is convicted for the same offense with a two to four year term.
