Geology of Gold Deposits at Bannack Montana
The Bannack district on Grasshopper Creek in Beaverhead County hosts placer gold discovered in August 1862 and early quartz mining. Ore deposits form at limestone and diorite contacts with marmarized limestone and garnet zones. Gold occurs with tellurides and tetradymite in oxidized ores and along diorite extensions, with primary sulphide ore on the Dunn level. Specimens suggest high temperature formation for calcite and garnet with chlorite and specularite, and placer gold likely derives from lode deposits.
