George R. Baker states September saw about 100 farm and ranch jobs filled as hay harvest wound down. Forty-one via direct placement, others spot hires. total September placements 81 show falling labor demand from August. Seasonal farm work and 40 office and support roles contributed to the month's results.
Harriet Jane Hildreth 75 a Beaverhead County native born March 6 1873 in Ione California died Saturday at Barrett hospital after a lingering illness. She moved to Dillon after 1925 and left eight children six survive including E W Hildreth George T Hildreth John D Hildreth and daughters Koenig Chapman Kerr. Funeral Tuesday at Grace Methodist Church with interment Mountain View Cemetery.
Henry Hignight dominated Dillon Rifle Club Friday night scoring 275 total with 86 offhand 93 sitting and 96 prone. C Buckingham took second with 272 Al Simon totaled 271 others included Sommers 208 Ballou 248 Koenig 270 Rosenau 227 Langdorf 284 and Jacobson 236.
J. C. Wedum chaired the Dillon Rotary club in the Andrus hotel dining room. G. L. Daniels and others attended as new and guest members as Booster club tickets for MSNC athletic events were outlined under the chamber of commerce. W Edgar Williams of Williams Feed & Machinery completed a two day Ralston Purina feeding advisory council in Pocatello Idaho. Twenty two Purina dealers from seven western states attended and toured farms to study management feeding and sanitation practices. Upon completion he will receive a diploma and a gold ring from Purina marking his status as a graduate feeding advisor.
Mr and Mrs J M Burt returned to their home in Idaho Falls Thursday morning after visiting relatives here last week.
Beaverhead county setting novel Lona Hanson by Thomas Savage has reached Dillon with autographed copies at Mathews store. Savage, a Beaverhead native and Beaverhead County High School alumnus, recently sold movie rights for 50000 dollars.
The body of First Lt Walter F Shaffner son of Mr and Mrs John F Shaffner of Beaverhead valley is being returned for burial from temporary cemeteries in Manilla and Saipan He was killed in action in the South Pacific on Oct 1 1944 A native of Dillon he attended Beaverhead County High School and Montana State University Fire guard in summers prior to enlisting in 1942 Funeral arrangements await arrival in Dillon Parents survive him along with three brothers and several aunts and uncles
The Reno cafe at Armstead operated by William Backus was lightly damaged last Saturday night by a fire sparked in a neon sign wiring. Volunteers arrived from Dillon but Armstead residents had already extinguished the flames, with a thorough check showing the efforts successful. Many Dillon residents followed the fire trucks and stayed for a midnight snack.
Beaverhead Chamber of Commerce directors voted to hold regular full membership meetings quarterly starting Jan. Tickets for college athletics are over half sold with 47 memberships left. A batch of 50 Grizzly Bobcat game tickets arrived and will be sold at Geo. M. Gosman drug store for the Oct. 16 game in Butte.
An all day session at the Presbyterian church included morning services, a noon dinner, and an afternoon address by Rev. C. H. McCleave of Billings who dedicated the new church furniture. Special music and strong attendance marked the event.
Parents announce the birth of a baby boy to Mr John Harmon and Mrs Eleanor Harmon of Scoby. Mrs Harmon is remembered as Eleanor Nelson and was involved as a demonstration agent.

Montana State Normal College adds Gert Daniels Helen Campbell Ruth Dillavoy Ruth Greenfield Walter J. McGuire Myrtle Savidge Elena Slepcevich to its 1948 49 faculty. Autumn enrollment reaches 219 with 119 men and 100 women including 81 GIs. Registration continues as new instructors begin duties.
Governor Dewey's special train headed to Idaho Falls from Butte is expected to stop in Dillon briefly from 5 43 to 5 50 am Thursday though local Republicans doubt he will appear due to the early hour. George M Gosman Montana GOP chairman rode the train from Spokane and joins the governor on Montana cities. Frank Hazelbaker Beaverhead GOP chair hesitated to pressure a Dillon speech because of the exhausting campaign schedule.
Five city churches including Methodist Baptist Church of God Presbyterian and Episcopal plan a 6 pm reception Sunday at St. James guild hall to welcome Mon ey State Normal college students instructors in Dijon. The committee promises warmth and informality and invites all students and teachers to attend.
Beaverhead county VFW members and families attended a Big Hole post picnic in the 1.0.0.F. hall due to rain. About 100 guests from Dillon and Lima, plus Geraldine auxiliary members, enjoyed welcome remarks, games, cards, music, and refreshments organized by a committee led by Mrs. Fred Nelson.
Louis Murphy Thompson, injured when struck by falling brick while helping operate a fire hose at the Eagles hall fire last week, remains under observation at Barrett hospital. Dr Routledge reports a slight concussion. Thompson, a volunteer firefighter, aided until flames were controlled.
John E. Blomquist a valley ranchman was named director of the Vigilante Farm Loan association to fill the unexpired term of Findlay Watson at a meeting last week. Present were C. C. Ray Simon a Dillon Kiwanis delegate to Boys State held last August at Montana State Normal College gave a report on the successful session at the Kiwanis meeting. He described highlights of the 1948 conclave and expressed appreciation for the opportunity. Gibson Gering of Billings was a guest.
The local American Association of University Women unit held its first meeting of the season Monday evening at St James Episcopal rectory. President Virginia Irvine and Mrs J H Mikkelson hosted and outlined the program for the coming year.
The Montana Taxpayers association reports Dillon, Beaverhead County seat, sits in a low tax bracket with total 1948-49 taxes of 111.32 per 1000 valuation, down from 115.41 in 1947-48. Sidney records the highest taxes in the group of 15, while Cut Bank is lowest. Overall Montana property taxes rise about 11.6 percent for 1948, with county levies and school taxes driving most increases. county taxes up about 15 percent, city taxes up about 11 percent, and university and hospital levies higher due to valuation increases. No state general fund levy will be made for the seventh straight year.

The body of Pfc Harry Spehar, son of Mrs Lucy Spehar, killed in action October 27 1944 on Leyte, arrives from Ogden Utah. Honors include a rosary tonight and a 10 am Thursday requiem mass at St Rose Church with Beaverhead post Legion rites. City government suspends business during the funeral.
Omer Idso longtime pastor of Sheridan and Twin Bridges Methodist churches accepts a new pastorate at Lakeview Oregon effective immediately. The promotion follows his wartime service in the chaplains corps and later rank of full colonel. He serves as chaplain of Anderson-Simpson Post 89 and is a member of Sheridan Lodge 20 AF and AM The Madisonian.
Seven defendants cited by police for driving over fire hose during a blaze at the Eagles hall last Tuesday appeared in court Wednesday. After pleading guilty to a city ordinance violation, a $10 fine was assessed by Judge George E. Baker but suspended to deter future offenses.
