Beaverhead 4-H member wins national electrification award

Bill Nelson, son of Mr and Mrs Jed Nelson of the Big Hole Basin, is named among four high winners in the national farm home electrification contest. He earns a $100 state prize and a cash award, and will receive a trip to the national convention in Kansas City November 14 to 18, with plans to attend. Joe Krall, Beaverhead county high school vocational agriculture director, confirms.

Kiwanis Cleanup Set For Next Sunday

Dillon Kiwanis members plan a grounds cleanup at Bagley school to level ground for games. City and county will provide trucks. The club also announced a home talent play to be staged Oct 29 and 30 at the high school auditorium with Frank Madden as chairman and Ed Townsend Jr and La Moine LaFay as assistants. Montana State coach John Breeden and Frank Ward attended and showed film of last year’s Grizzly-Bobcat game.

Sailor Earns Battle Efficiency Pennant on USS Deliver

Jack Meine, a US Navy seaman from Dillon Montana, serves aboard the salvage ship USS Deliver with the Pacific fleet. The vessel won the Battle Efficiency Pennant and KE for general excellence during the 1947 48 fiscal year. Crew with six months on board earn an Fy insignia.

An Old Time Examiner subscriber recalls a Dillon cast presenting the sacred opera Esther in 1901. The libretto was shown at a historic opera house on North Main Street under Edwin Robinson and the First Baptist Church.

Plans are complete for the annual Hereford show and sale opening Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Lima Matron Lola Ford Dies in Los Angeles

Mrs Lola C Ford matron of Lima dies in Los Angeles after a sudden illness. Her funeral is set for Thursday at 11 am at the Lima Methodist church with Rev Lewis D Smith officiating. Burial rites by Elva Boardman chapter of Eastern Star follow at the cemetery. She was born December 26 1881 in Blue Earth Minnesota and lived in Beaverhead county 44 years. Surviving are her son Lewis C Ford of Portland two sisters in Lima and Dillon a grandson two nieces and four grand nephews.

Spehar Rites Held for War Hero in Dillon

Dillon and community paid honor to Pfc. Harry Spehar who fell in action in the Philippines. Remains were laid to rest at Mountain View cemetery after rosary at Brundage chapel and a requiem mass at St. Rose Catholic church. Full military honors were given by Beaverhead post of the American Legion.

Beav erhead Couple Celebrates 64th Anniversary

Judge and Mrs Louis Stahl longtime Beaverhead County residents observed their 64th wedding anniversary last Monday. A Grace Methodist church program honored the couple. They are German natives who married here and have nine children, six of whom survive along with 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Auxiliary Committee Appointed for Legion Ladies

The American Legion Auxiliary held its first fall meeting at Mrs. Philip Lovell’s home on South Atlantic street. Officers were named including President Mrs. Harold Hendron and vice presidents Mrs. Glenn Stinson and Mrs. James Kochel. Committees for Armistice Day and various chairmanships were formed. Plans discussed covered Beaver Lodge activities, a weekly educational film program, a planned carnival, and concerns about the state aid hot lunch project. The group will meet in the Lovell residence recreation room this year.

Patrolman Reports Highway Accidents Near Dillon

Patrolman reports two crashes on a Dillon area highway. Edwin B. Holm of Idaho Falls hit a parked car owned by John Ellis Rush of Butte. both cars wrecked and injuries were minor. Bruce Nye of Monida crashed into a backing truck, car totaled but no injuries. Patrolman stresses increased caution as darkness lengthens.

4 H Members Win Honors In Judging

Beaverhead county 4 H clubs earned top prizes at the annual Butte 4 H livestock show. Darwin Peterson and Clayton Huntley of Wisdom tied for first in the boys meat judging. Calf scramble winners included Bob Routledge Reichle Jack Peterson Wisdom Darwin Peterson Wisdom and Chester Downing Dillon with calves to be raised as projects for next year’s sale. Beavers battle Butte Fresh in a hard fought game with a lone first quarter touchdown via Worther’s reverse. Dennis connected on passing attempts but receiving misfires and costly fumbles hampered scoring as Worther and Brown led the Beaver effort while Thompson and Ward stabilized defense.
