Big send off for soldiers in Beaverhead county

The second Beaverhead county draft contingent, 44 men led by Bruce A. Risley, departed Thursday for Camp Lewis at American Lake. A Dillon crowd gathered at the depot park for music and speeches by Rev. Humphrey, Rev. Jensen and ex Gov. White, with farewells as the train left.

Accident Fatal to Girl in Montana Shooting

Gladys Bradley, 15, died when a gun in the hands of her 14 year old companion Joe Collins accidentally discharged. Coroner’s jury ruled accidental shooting. The Idaho-born girl had been living at Bannack with her stepmother and worked at the Collins home. Her funeral was held in Bannack.

Garver Named Chairman of Montana University History Commission

Doctor F H Garver head of the State Normal history department is appointed chairman of the University commission on Montana history. The group will publish quarterly monographs with Garver writing the first prospectus in the planned 1918 series. Other members include A L Stone W L Wilson H H Swain and P C Phillips. The Society of Montana Pioneers and the State Historical Library support the effort.

Montana’s state fair shows phenomenal growth with cattle horses sheep swine and poultry entries. Secretary R S Skinner notes demand for new barns is urgent as existing space is fully utilized and sheep exhibitors bring notable displays to Helena.

Biggest cattle shipment leaves Monida for eastern markets

Beaverhead county sent its largest cattle shipment to eastern markets last Friday. The train of fifty six cars carried 1485 head valued at 100000 dollars. A L Metzell shipped 263 whiteface steers while Duff Rife and Metzell handled 800 steers and fat cows. Remaining cattle came from Centennial valley farmers. A private car accompanied the shipment.

Business in Southern Part of County Reports Growth

Monida businessman BH. Paul passed through Dillon en route to Butte on a business mission. He praised conditions in the southern county and Centennial valley, noting no drought and a normal wild hay crop. He said they are currently harvesting their annual duck and goose crop with ample outside help and no wage issues expected.

Heavy Rain Restores Dry Spell for Local Farms

Rain ends three and a half month dry period boosting wheat seeding and fall harrowing. Farmers expect alfalfa rebound as moisture allows a third crop. prior months showed scant or no rainfall with limited totals across the county.

Patriotic association to buy victrola for Dillon soldiers

At a Patriotic association meeting it was voted to raise funds to purchase a victrola for the Dillon boys at Camp Lewis American Lake. The item will cost $50 and may be taken to France. The group urges more ladies to attend meetings and help with Red Cross work as recent turnout has been small and limited progress. Towns nearby are sending more war relief supplies, prompting a call for every Dillon woman to dedicate at least one afternoon weekly to Red Cross work.

Orrion Pilon Wins Trip to the State Fair

Orrion Pilon, son of Homer Pilon and a Willowview school pupil, won the Beaverhead county Potato Club contest and earned a free trip to the state fair in Helena. The program, run by the Extension Department of Montana State College and county commissioners, promotes four clubs for youths ten to eighteen.

Mrs. Mary O'Bryan Dies at 26 in Dillon

Mary Rogera O'Bryan wife of Morris O'Bryan died at her home near Dillon on Wednesday evening aged 26. Born in DeBuque Iowa she was the daughter of John and Mary Rogera. Survived by husband four sons parents two sisters six brothers one brother in France. Funeral at St Rose Catholic church Saturday at 9 30 Rev Father Foley officiating with interment at Mountain View cemetery.

Vacation Ends at Beaverhead County High School

Beaverhead County High School resumes for fall and winter terms with a large freshman class and over one hundred enrolled on the first day. About half the students are new, with many expected from outside districts. One hour recitation periods, Saturday classes, and no ball team due to late opening. Faculty includes Principal B. E.
