Beaverhead county youths report lively Camp Lewis arrival with cheers in Spokane and Missoula. Letters from Bruce Risley and Clarence Hoerning describe packing lists meals and camp routines, while George Lasich and Joe Murray praise home support and air of pride in Dillon.
The local board met to review a second call of thirty men from the first 110. Twenty one appeared, nine did not, five enlisted in the regular army, four failed to appear. Of the examined, nine claimed dependents exemption and five were rejected for physical unfitness.
Charles Marble hauled a 1655 bushel wheat load from his ranch two miles south of town, said to be the largest ever brought to Dillon. The 9360 pound grain plus 2190 pound wagon made a gross weight of 11550 pounds, with part dumped to fit the scales.
Ranch auctions in Jackson and Dillon promise strong demand as government horse contracts draw buyers. George Ditty of Dillon Horse Sales notes numerous government notices seeking horses of all kinds, boosting prices. Beaverhead County horses in good condition, with locals urged to present prime stock for top dollar. several sales including Paige and Patterson ranch near Jackson and Sullivan Brothers sale on October 13 feature cattle, milch cows and farm machinery.
Eight young men enlisted in the Twentieth Engineers corps last week and left for Fort Wright on Friday. They will proceed to the American University at Washington City. The volunteers waited three days at Dillon to secure transportation and showed loyalty by reporting on time. Names: George Clayton, George J. Smith, John L. Sanners, Charles Bonnifield, Clifford A. Joy, James Cunningham, John S. Downey, Charles McLaughlin. Charles Bonnifield led the group.
Jack Noonan experienced a harrowing event when gasoline in his Ford tank ignited at Montana Auto Supply while fueling. He struck a match to light a cigar, the sulfur igniting the fuel. he jammed the opening with coveralls and smothered the flames, burning his eyebrows and hair in the process.
Mr and Mrs James Miller visited the city from Rochester to handle matters tied to Zeigler Springs The known springs resort owned by Mr Miller will be developed into a popular resort with a first class plunge hotel and parks for camping parties The site lies on a good highway between Dillon and Twin Bridges Aimed at attracting both moderate and well to do visitors to enjoy the improvements
James Judge sold his Madison county sheep interests to Gilbert Livestock Company for just over 200000 dollars. The transaction includes 6000 head of sheep, 2300 acres of deeded land, hundreds of leased acres, 200 cattle and 50 work horses at Home Park. Judge and family will winter in California and return to Dillon in spring.
J. Scott of Grant a leading chicken fancier arrived from Horse Prairie after returning from Helena where he swept Leghorn awards at the state fair. His prizes include sweepstakes cockerel best shaped hen best ten birds and multiple firsts in cock hen pullet and pen categories amid eleven hundred birds exhibited.
James Powell who drives the Bannack to Jackson stage was seriously hurt last Monday when his four horse team ran away at Millpoint. He suffered a compound fracture of the left leg and head and body injuries. Powell was taken to Dillon by Fred Hale and Arthur Contway and is in Magnus hospital care.
A telegram to Jay Baker said Mikel J Goggin was struck and killed by a train in Rawlins Wyoming. Goggin had registered at Dillon on June 6 but his number was not yet called and he worked as a harness maker for Chas Bell at Wisdom.
Jud Gibson a Grant area dry land farmer left for Regina Saskatchewan last Saturday to enlist in the Canadian army for five years or until the end of the war. Born in the United States he had previously served four years in the Canadian army and was returned to Canada when the call came.
Forest Superintendent John B Somers received 40,000 trout fry last week from the Stars Fish Hatchery in Helena to stock Rattlesnake Lakes and Grasshopper Creek. John Scott and Fred Rife unloaded the fry and transferred them to the lakes.
Beaverhead county prepares a noon send-off for 44 soldiers from the third contingent bound for the American Lake training camp. The town to close at noon and parade from the courthouse to the depot with a concert, address by Dr. J. Monroe, and a unity celebration led by Judge Joseph Smith.
C L Worth a Beaverhead county wheat king returned from St Paul where he attended the nonpartisan convention of producers and consumers. The meeting united delegates from across the country to discuss food conservation policies and a square deal for all. Worth noted support for government price controls and calls for more primary markets while criticizing press views and political leaders. He described crop prospects as below normal and listed regional potato prices to illustrate the living costs compared with Dillon Montana.
A business meeting at the Baptist church will hear reports from nine two member teams on the every member canvass conducted Sunday afternoon to secure pledges for the church current year expenses.
Mr and Mrs John Shesser and Mrs Frank Blair motored from Horse Prairie to Dillon yesterday and then planned a short visit to Butte for a few days.
Wheat yields across benchlands east and west of Dillon are better than expected this season though shy of 1916. Increased acreage and higher grain prices offset lower yields, leaving dry land farmers in good condition despite a smaller overall harvest.
