Washington debate grows over antitrust style limits on unions. McClellan committee findings push federal action to curb monopoly power and coercive work stoppages. Proposals include outlawing compulsory union membership and restricting union political spending to reflect merit and choice.

Installation ceremonies for the Rainbow Girls at Masonic Hall on Saturday night named Miss Mary Garrison of Glen as Worthy Advisor. Other officers installed included Gayle Wheat Charity Nancy Backus Hope Joan Beaver Faith Billie Ann McFadden Chaplain Dianne Pendergast and several color group leaders with Judy Hubard serving as Reporter.
Cubmaster Dave Williams of Pack 60 announces a year start meeting Friday at 7 30 p m in Bagley School for boys aged 8 to 10 and their parents to assist in proper registration. Dillon PTA sponsors the Cub Scouts with 72 boys registered last year. Prompt attendance is stressed.
The Montana Education Association sponsors a six week series of public service films on KAWS. The program begins December 12 and runs Sundays at 4 10 p.m. Daylight saving time. The series targets parents and teachers.
Norman Downing 22 day old infant dies at St James hospital after bathtub accident at ranch home. His brother Douglas 11 died Sept 11 from burns. Mass for Norman held at St Rose Church with interment at Mountain View Cemetery. Community offers sympathy to Mr and Mrs Chester Downing.
The Helena Presbytery fall meeting in Dillon drew 120 high school members from multiple churches. A Westminster Fellowship program piece titled This Is Your Life was staged by youth leaders and delegates. A resolution urged Montana Youth synod to send four Work Camp delegates in 1958, one from each presbytery, and received unanimous support.
Beaverhead County High School elected class officers for 1957 58 with seniors led by President Bob O Evelyn and Vice President Mary Garrison. Other grade officers include Gayle Wheat secretary treasurer and Fred Backus yell leader for the seniors. Juniors chose David Ferris as President Dallas Jones as Vice President Marty Miller secretary Tex Marchessault treasurer and Jo Ann Gransberg yell leader. Sophomores named Ray Nygren President Bill Martin Vice President Billie Ann McFadden Secretary Tod Holland Treasurer and Karolie Gibbons yell leader. Freshmen elected Bill Hugler President Eugene Rebish Vice President Kenna Thomas Secretary Treasurer and Evelyn Withington yell leader.
Plans for the Dillon Hereford Show and Sale are forming for October 22 and 23. The 20th Hereford Show and Sale features judge John McDonald of Vaughn and auctioneer H B Sager of Bozeman. Forty three animals are entered and events include a smoker at the Elks Club and a dinner awards program.
The Catholic Youth Organization at St Rose Parish will hold its first meeting Thursday evening September 25 at 7:30. Rev Bernard Sullivan urges all high school age Catholics to attend as the group affiliated with the National Catholic Youth Organization plans a four phase program. Moderators Patrick Curran Miss Rosenlee McQuillan and Miss Shirley Moran will lead. Important business and officer elections will take place and refreshments will follow.
Mrs. Ruth Ann Dart representing the Rebekah and Odd Fellows Polio Project presented an adjustable walker and wheelchair to Barrett Hospital during a brief ceremony. The hospital superintendent received the gift, part of a state wide distribution totaling 1725 in equipment for polio relief this year. East Helena officials and lodge officers attended.
Beaverhead County High School Principal C. E. Naugle joins a four man Merit Rating Committee formed by the Montana Association of School Administrators Dell Langbell chairs the committee and Kalispell Montana hosts the survey. The panel will conduct an intensive survey and report to MASA at the December meeting.
Mrs. Dan Pendergast of Melrose and Mrs. Bob Blackstone of Havre attended the National Home Demonstration Council convention in Columbus Ohio. About 2000 women from 41 states Hawaii and Puerto Rico participated as Ohio hosted. The theme was Opportunity Responsibility and Achievement and delegates were challenged with What is that in thine hand. Continuous coverage continued on page five.
Twenty one people were treated during a Dillon visit by a Montana Elks Association driven Speech Hearing Therapy unit. Therapist George Davis screened 75 to 100 children for speech and hearing defects with 10 needing treatment, and more under observation. The unit plans visits every five weeks with the next set for Oct 21 22. Therapy is free. contact county nurse Mrs Helen Smith at Beaverhead Laboratory Foundation building.
After a storm that brought the season’s first appreciable snowfall the region enjoys autumn weather. The Western College weather station records show a 39 degree low this morning and daily highs and lows from Sept 18 to Sept 24 with an average around 63 and cumulative precipitation.
