Dillon public school student council organized a cleanup campaign with Chamber of Commerce support. After a recent snow storm, pupils gathered Tuesday with rakes hoes shovels and bags to clear weeds leaves and debris before dismissal. Every pupil contributed to the orderly effort and the council represents each classroom.
Mr. and Mrs. Berg Christensen Mr. and Mrs. Ras Hansen and Mr. and Mrs. Chris Bay returned from Seattle where they attended the national Convention of the Danish Brotherhood at the Olympic hotel September 15 to 19. The event was largely attended with engaging business sessions and entertaining social activities.
Donna Carrigan was elected president at the first meeting of the Beaverhead County High School Girls' Club. Officers include Ann Carroll, Kay Whitworth, Jo Anne Arbour and class representatives from seniors to freshmen. Mrs. Pachio becomes sponsor succeeding Miss Evelyn Mikkelsen. The club, organized in 1938, runs events such as term freshmen parties and a Mother's Day tea.
The dedication program for the lighted turf field at War Memorial park was reset to Friday night Oct 3. A parade led by the Elks drum corps and high school band will precede a flag raising and dedication address before the Beavers vs Anaconda Reserves game. The Beavers prep for a tough Livingston clash coached by ex Beaver star Frank Little. Three new players Rebish Burwell Coppin joined tryouts after returns from Salmon and California trip.
The Society of Montana Pioneers and Sons and Daughters of Pioneers announce a October 2 3 4 convention in Virginia City. A re enactment of early Montana history will be staged at the Fairweather Inn. Beaverhead members may contact Mrs Tonrey and housing inquiries go to Frank Carey. Members born in Montana before 1868 qualify to join.
Albert Stamm, veteran Dillon jeweler now living in Butte, spent part of the week visiting relatives and friends in Dillon. Among his guests were former Hawaii governor Joseph B. Poindexter and his daughter Helen, who are also in Dillon.
Beaverhead work starts on Irvine and Cotton certified seed potato farm east of the city after a snow delay. The 275 acre operation is backed by equity and penage from E. E. Isaacs and others with Bernard Williams noting the crop is excellent. Separate cases report Emmett Connor, 64, jailed after pleading guilty to a forged check and Willie Castle sentenced for a bad check.
H T Anderson of Dillon Feed & Seed completed a 34 foot Fairbanks scale installation in the company's North Main street elevator. The 30 ton capacity scale includes a hydraulic lift and 20 ton grain pit, enabling quick tipping and full discharge into bins. Automatic pillars lift grain, all electrically powered and controlled, to boost efficiency.
Dillon launches a pilot street oiling on Pacific street from Kentucky to Orr. City engineer Sam Ward directs grading with two motor graders while contractor Charles B Snyder oversees the oiling using a hot oil distributor assisted by Hartwig from the state highway department. 2500 gallons of the same oil used in other cities have been purchased for the experiment.
Louis Schmittroth Jr. flew to Anchorage last week with plans to proceed to Fairbanks where he will be stationed as a radar instructor for the Philco company.
Weather observer Mr Osborne reports 1.34 inches of precipitation at Montana State Normal College last week during a major September snow storm. Tuesday afternoon brought 0.09 inches of rain with temperatures well below freezing. The wet snow caused bent trees and crop damage to wheat and peas, though the storm ended a long dry spell and will aid in moisture.
Montana Education Association sponsors a Monday meeting at the Bagley building in Dillon at 7 PM to discuss professionalization of teaching and educational matters. Delegates from Lima Sheridan Twin Bridges urged to attend. committee plans a cooperative approach on salaries schedules tenure retirement and community relationships.
Darwin Peterson of Riverside calf club won the state beef cattle judging title at the 4-H congress in Bozeman. Attendees included Neva Gnose Wise River Barbara Scott Armstead Rosalee Bastian Armstead with leaders Norman Downing and Mrs Ike Rife.
Mrs. Berniece Sargent and pupils gave piano selections at the Dillon Rotary Club meeting in the Andrus dining room. Performers included Donald Murray, Lois Peters, Carolyn Sargent, and Charles Murray. Guests were William Pope Rosemary Lane and Henry C. Carpenter. The Normal College reported higher registration and new meal advance payments and initiation fee were adopted.
A Bureau of Reclamation group arrives in Dillon to drill test shafts about 150 feet deep at seven proposed dam sites along the Missouri River headwaters. Work begins at Kelly reservoir on the upper Rattlesnake with sites planned on Birch creek Horse Prairie Blacktail creek and Clark's canyon Beaverhead river juncture.
Dart of Lou's Flowers' quint rolled 255 in Tuesday night's Commercial league, the week’s high individual. Jensen led with 576 across three games, Lou's 975 topped high team singles, Bond Grocery led three game series with 7173-2539 Tribune. Next week’s schedule lists matches for Sept. 29 30 across Tribune Paddock and Tyre State Bank Oasis Warner's Gosman's Creamery Eliel's Bay's Winn's Men’s Store Lou's Flowers and Tashes Bay's Butchers Roberts Market.
Prin. D L Johnson announced Alma Orman will teach girls physical education at Beaverhead County High School succeeding the late Mrs. Claudia Faust. She takes duties next Monday and will oversee the library. A Montana State Normal College graduate, she has five years teaching experience in Twin Bridges.
Indications point to record attendance at the annual Montana Hereford Futurity show and sale in Dillon October 12 and 13. Sixty bulls and herd sires from Montana ranches will be entered with J H Mikkelsen as secretary and H B Sager auctioneering.
Funeral services were held Friday at Brundage chapel for Raymond Miller who died September 11 at Barrett hospital from injuries when a truck he drove overturned on the highway north of Dell. The Beaverhead post American Legion oversaw the rites and interment was in Mountain View cemetery. Authorities say he was an army veteran of World War II.

Coach William Straugh sees 37 men report for football practice at Normal College on the autumn quarter opening. Veterans listed include Barnaby Billedeaux Pettit and Malia among others, with many strong high school prospects also signaled. Earl Barlow heads the 1947 Bulldogs as manager with assistants Dal Owens and Dale Pettit and Royal Morrison as assistant coach.
Frank Gorman started a house to house canvass in Dillon and vicinity to list all residents under 21 years. The census is conducted under Walter V. Grimes, clerk of District No.10, with parental cooperation urged by school authorities.
At the Masonic hall in Rain bow Virginia last Wednesday evening the Order of the Rainbow for Girls installed new elective and appointive officers. Rain bow leaders Dorothy Tyre Janet Curry Carol Giudici Donna Carrigan Frances Giudici and others filled chairs with Rain bow Masons Eastern Stars and friends in attendance.
Lloyd Whipple post 4163 VFW met with Commander Howard Rundle presiding. Albert E. Rhodes received a post commander badge. Plans discussed include a public dance at city hall auditorium on Nov 8 as a pre Armistice observance. A report praised the Sept 14 Elk Horn Springs picnic as a great success with many attending.
