Youngsters Enter Butte 4-H and Future Farmer Show
Beaverhead county youths head to Butte for the annual 4 H and Future Farmer livestock show August 4 5 and 6 at the Montana Livestock Auction pavilion. Fourteen junior exhibitors bring calves and fat steers of high quality for judging Saturday at 2 pm and sale Monday at 1 pm. Prizes include purple blue red and white ribbons with a calf scramble and a banquet at the Finlen hotel. Exhibits come from Beaverhead Madison Granite Deer Lodge Silver Bow and other counties.

National Guard Unit Sought For Beaverhead County
Barney Rankin of Bozeman met Dillon officials to discuss forming a Montana National Guard rifle company in Beaverhead. Needed are two officers and 29 enlisted men with full company strength at seven officers and 188 enlisted, plus a $39,000 annual payroll and $600 yearly for storage and drill space. A caretaker would start at $2,100 yearly, and future armory funding could permit community center use.

Five Years Given on Check Charge in District Court
Kenneth Gordon Swaney, 33, a transient ranch worker, pleaded guilty in district court Monday and was sentenced by Judge Lyman H. Bennett to five years in the state prison. This marks the longest local court term for such an offense in some time, with Swaney the third to be sentenced in as many weeks.

Orlando Tom Connelley former Dillon resident died suddenly at his Twin Falls Idaho home last Saturday. He was born in Dillon and worked as an accountant with the Bureau of Internal Revenue. He served in World War I and is survived by his widow two daughters a sister and two brothers. Burial was held locally.

Mrs Grace Webster Dies in Idaho Falls at 64
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Butte for Grace Webster 64 who died Thursday last week at her Idaho Falls home. She had suffered ill health since June and resided with husband George H. Webster in the city for about twelve years after moving from this community in 1939. Survived by two brothers in law J B Webster and Carl Webster both of Billings.

Labor shortage noted in Dillon area as potato fields seek workers
Fifteen potato pickers arrived in Dillon with six more scheduled to relieve the labor shortage at Irvine and Cotton fields east of the city. Manager Bernard Williams says more help is needed as Montana State Employment Service and local offices push a recruiting campaign. The shortage stems from 20 Texas Mexicans failing to arrive. some workers have left Texas but not shown up in Dillon. Transient labor moves on due to weather and crops damaged by recent storms, while the extension service previously reported 747 men and 53 women placed in jobs with 426 ranchers using the service.

George Pyle Funeral Set in California
Funeral services for George Pyle, longtime Grasshopper county ranchman, will be held Thursday at Brundage chapel with Rev. Lewis D. Smith officiating. Burial at Mountain View cemetery. Pyle, a Missouri native, died last week at his Kelseyville home after a 40 year county residence. Survivors include wife Eva, a brother and sister in law Andy Pyle of Polaris, and Carl Knoll in Dillon, plus several nieces and nephews.

Horse Killed After Night Collision Near City
Bert Kruletz and his son and his brother J. Kruletz escaped with scratches and bruises last Friday night when a horse darted from the darkness three miles south of the city and was struck by the car. The vehicle was badly damaged and towed to town. Sheriff Paul Temple and Patrolman Bob Wright investigated and found the horse with a broken leg and other injuries and euthanized it.
