Montana City Signboard Marks Forgotten Montana Gold Camp
The Montana City sign near the Butte line marks a vanished town once the Jefferson county seat. Gold from Prickly Pear Creek brought prospectors in 1862, led by a man named Harlbert with a controversial partner, to lay out a townsite and build crude structures, though the diggings soon played out and nothing remains but a sign.
