Mary Ann Luebben editor of The Beaver Beaverhead county high school publication will give the keynote speech tracing the history of the newspaper and its work in the United States. K B Kizer and Al Erickson will present the newspaper in hometown service with a concluding report on the Montana state convention held in Billings. Dillon delegates include Dave Williams and Jack Barrett.
Twin Bridges Mont line of 75 yearling Hereford bulls to be sold at Butte stockyards on Saturday November 1 starting at 1 30 pm. Bulls hail from Bayers Hereford ranch and consignments include multiple breeders for the Montana Futurity class Hereford show and sale October 26 27.
Members of the high school branch of the United States Defense Board and Teacher-Parents group meet to discuss forming a state charter. Mrs. D. L. MacDonald of Bozeman spoke on benefits. meeting attended with strong interest. Mrs. MacDonald hosted by Mrs. O. A. Bergeson.
Kiwanis praises newspapers for supporting Kiwanis news and service programs during Newspaper Week. Noting the press as essential to free government and democratic life, quotes Booth Tarkington Charles Beard Winthrop Aldrich and W K Kellogg on the value of a free press and free speech.
Beaverhead county sees a surge in stock shipments this month with Union Pacific station agent B L Chism noting large cattle and sheep car orders. About 50 cars of sheep have left the UP line, with 70 more cattle cars reserved and October shipments projected near 200 cars. Seed peas also move, Ferry-Morse lines sending 12 cars to Detroit and two to Idaho Falls, while 25 carloads of peas are being cleaned at Roger Brothers’ warehouse for soon shipment as freight traffic through Dillon doubles.
With 348 head of choice lambs ewes and rams passing through the hands of Col E O Walter auctioneer from Filer Idaho the Beaverhead ram show and sale concluded with an average price of 33.19 and total spend of 11549. Fox Top Buyer W C Fox Salmon Idaho led purchases with 42 head for 1212 followed by William H Wyatt Dell 40 head 1020 and Olaf Rostad Lennep 32 head 17015. Lot 52 Grand Champion pen of rams from Mt Haggin Livestock Anaconda bought by Cook Sheep Co Dell. Class winners Rambouillets Deer Lodge Farms Williams and Pauly Deer Lodge Hampshires Mount Haggin Livestock Anaconda.
Tom Hartwig remains the leader in the bowling standings after posting a 247 high in the first week. Floyd Vandegrift followed with 234 and 233, while Roberts notched 228, Tim Tash 225, and Judd Brundage 224. Women bowlers also posted scores led by Mrs. B Jack with 201 and 181, with Mrs. Long at 180.
Reuben A. Holton, 50, died on the porch of his Hogan's alley cabin after noon on Monday. A ranch laborer from Idaho Falls, he recently worked at Sam Peterson ranch and suffered a cracked rib in August. He had been in Dillon for treatment when the heart attack occurred. funeral rites will be held in Idaho Falls tomorrow.
Six local boys nursed blisters after an ill wind blew them to a prank. City police officer Al Johnson took six lads into custody for letting air out of car tires. The pump supplied by the officer and the wind reversed briefly. officials warned similar misdemeanors will be dealt with.
Owen D. Speer, governor of this Rotary district, will speak in Dillon on Monday October 6. He was nominated at the May district conference and elected at the 1941 Rotary International convention in Denver. Speer will advise club officers on administrative duties and Rotary service activities during his year guiding the 112th district.
The Montana State Fish and Game commission announced Chink season will run from October 26 to November 16, with hunting from 7 am to dark on Sundays Armistice Day and from noon to dark on other days. The daily bag limit is three cock pheasants or partridges, with a possession limit of six cocks or a two day bag. The season extends two weeks due to large bird numbers.
The Girl Scout and Brownie packs leaders group will meet at the home of Mrs. N. Lacry Friday Oct. 3 at 3 p m. All leaders are requested to attend. This is the second meeting of the season led by the new officers.
The State Board of Railroad Commissioners will hold a public hearing in Liberty Hall Butte on October 7 to decide on the Union Pacific petition to discontinue passenger trains Nos 30 and 31 between Butte and the Montana Idaho line at Monida. The board cites needs for coaches baggage cars steam manpower and supplies for national defense. Interested parties should attend at 10 am. An earlier order from Union Pacific in Omaha preceded the announcement.
Names of the 12 draftees scheduled to depart Dillon on Monday October 8 are posted. They must report October 7 at the selective service headquarters and then proceed to the Missoula induction station before heading to Camp Lewis Washington. The Beaverhead draftees for September left yesterday for final exams at Missoula, joining two transfers from Wyoming and Iowa.
County Clerk Norman Giles and Deputy W M Stone rested this week following Dan Cupid. No marriage licenses issued this week. Over the past month only nine permissions to wed were granted by the two men. Dillon led with three couples. entries came from Lima Twin Bridges Bozeman Blackfoot Idaho Falls Idaho and Logan Utah.
Judge Henry G. Rodgers sentenced two admitted forgers in district court. Kenneth Dennison 28 formerly of Utah pled guilty to forging a $17 check drawn on M Rand and received a one year term in Deer Lodge state penitentiary. Ralph Clark booked on forgery charges for cashing a $57 check on Ella Campbell of Armstead and is linked to a stolen suit.
Montana Education association will draw three Beaverhead County high school instructors for the MEA gathering in Bozeman October 23 to 25. Miss Fay Kirkpatrick will address the convention on An Escalator for Good Reading. Miss Evelyn Rimel will report, and Miss Helen Dahlberg will discuss high school faculty advisor problems in Great Falls during the Bozeman MEA week.
Luebben, a Kemper Military School cadet from Boonville Missouri, will begin training this week under a news release. Nineteen cadets and one faculty officer are enrolled in the course.
The B C H S Beavers earned a 6 0 victory over St Peter's as Captain Jack Rogan ran eight yards for a touchdown and Conger failed the conversion. The win came amid a late drive after forcing a punt with the second half quiet until the final gun. Friday night the Beavers face Butte high.
Neighbors of Woodcraft plan their monthly meeting at 8 o clock tonight at Mrs. Mabel Crichton’s home. Past Guardian Neighbors will chair with Gertrude Lyon Nellie Lanner Bertha Cardinale Nellie Nelson Mayme Hoffman Helen Talent Sarah Wolf Mary Molleur Georgia Deputy Florence Hughes Jennie Haynes Hazel Farrell Susan Findling Dora Smith. Refreshments follow the business session served by Mrs. Crichton and Mrs. Deputy. The Juveniles meet at 6 30.
