Mrs Mary Judge and Mrs Ber tha Battle left Dillon Saturday for Wisconsin to visit relatives and friends there. Mr and Mrs Bert Orr Jr and daughter Mary Grace drove them to Butte.
Notices to seven volunteers and draftees were mailed by the Beaverhead county selective service board. Selectees report to the federal building on Monday for final physicals before leaving for Missoula and Camp Lewis. One obituary notes Mrs. Sarah P. Howard, 92, of Beaverhead county, died suddenly of a heart attack at her Railroad avenue home.
George R Metlen 71 a Beaverhead county native and former Montana Highway Commission secretary died at his Phillips apartment home after a yearlong illness. A civil engineer by trade he knew county topography water rights and boundaries and authored Montana history pieces. He led the Beaverhead Mining Association 1939 40 and served as a state Democratic committeeman.
Hamilton high school defeated Beavers 2-0 as Con Ger and the defense held a sputtering Beaver squad. Key plays included a safety by Dillon quarterback Con Ger after a botched goal line snap and a stingy Beaverss defense until the late third period.
Rife Dillon was accepted by a U S Navy Flight board and notified to report at Sand Point naval base Seattle for final examinations after ongoing tests in Pocatello Idaho. The base is located in Seattle opposite the harbor.
The Works Progress Administration will restart county road repairs today after a cut in Beaverhead. Two units, Horse Prairie and Dillon to Jackson, will employ about 12 to 15 men each, under superintendent Fred Krause. About 30 men are currently on the project, with over 50 expected by week’s end. apply at the courthouse to qualify and register.
Dillon's Elks Lodge No. 1554 plans an open house for members and ladies on October 4. Festivities begin October 11 with a dance for the Elks and the Virginia City lodge. All Dillon Elks urged to attend the October 4 open house.
Four marriage licenses were issued from the office of Norman Giles, county clerk and recorder. Applications included Carl McLaughlin of Twin Bridges with Rosalie Pillen of Sheridan. Jack Henry Dodge and Ida Louise Clark of Idaho Falls. Gerwing S. Morgan Jr. and Agnes E. Reese of Blackfoot. and J. D. Pritchard with Marie H. Long of Bozeman.
Kenneth Denison was arraigned on a forgery count in Judge Louis Stahl's court and bound over to district court on a $500 bond which he could not furnish. He allegedly cashed a $17 check bearing the forged name Marcus Rand of Horse Prairie. Denison pled not guilty. R Lounsberry, transient, faced pettit larceny for ransacking a truck. 60 day suspended sentence granted on condition to leave town. Rex King, another transient, charged with disturbance, also received a suspended sentence.
Orphan Annie the Bantam spring chicken has adopted a tiny relative after their mother died. She sits beside the chick and helps raise the three newborns until two survive, earning amused sympathy from onlookers at the William Dungan ranch east of Dillon.
County committees of Beaverhead and Madison met at Twin Bridges last Thursday in the first meeting under the new governmental setup. The FSA aims to determine loans, loan adjustments, and farmer aid across livestock and agricultural programs. Dillon representatives included Gene Bond, W. B. Willey, Gene Blinn, and B. R. Williams, with Edgar Rife and Tom Foley from Armstead and Martin Jackson from Jackson also attending.
Beaverhead county home demonstration council delegates gather in Dillon on Monday September 29 for the annual fall meeting at the county high school little theatre. Miss Frances Smith Montana State College will keynote with a luncheon by the high school home economics group. Plans for the 1941-42 program and achievement day are set for discussion along with upcoming club meetings.
Edwin R. Buck a Montana Power executive leaves for New York to attend the Joe Louis Louis Nova boxing match on Sept 29 and the World Series. He plans to see Fordham Southern Methodist football on Oct 4 and will be joined by his wife and mother. A stop in Rochester, Minnesota is planned for an appendectomy for Buck who has chronic appendicitis.
Enrollment at Montana State Normal College opened with slightly fewer than 229 students. Freshmen took the American Council Psychological examination yesterday and today, orientation is complete, classes began at 8 a.m., and the first assembly stressed the get acquainted theme. The annual reception and dance are planned for Friday evening September 26, with church open programs that week.
County Clerk Albert S. Baker reports Beaverhead county taxes total $346,655.30 for 1941, up from $327,552.21 in 1940 due to higher taxable value of $222,206. The 1 mill high school transportation levy raises trust and agency funds to 21 mills. Notices go out November 1 after early completion of the books.
Henry Cameron Gowen 45 a Dillon resident died after sudden illness Friday afternoon at Dr W H Stephan’s offices He was born October 23 1895 in Audrain County Missouri and lived in Dillon for 22 years A printer by trade he worked for Examiner Printing and Tribune Publishing later joining Montana Auto Sales Funeral rites were held at Brundage funeral home with Masonic and Baptist church honors and a Legion salute at Mountain View cemetery He is survived by his mother a twin brother Dysart a Dillon wife another brother Edward H Gowen and three sisters Martha Jane Truitt Mrs W C Jennings and Mrs Harry Gray
Beav erhead breeders bring 400 plus head to Dillon county fairgrounds for a two part event starting Monday Oct 29 with a morning show and a 1 pm sale. Col Earl O Walter of Filer Idaho will auction. Barry Barnard Williams Beaverhead county agent manages. Prizes include P J Lovell silver cup and 100 dollars from Dillon Chamber.
Internal combustion in a coal pile near the training school system prompted the closing of the primary building. Officials led by Paul Anderson say moist winter coal in bins steamed releasing gases. Students were sent home. coal to be removed and dried before reopening tomorrow.
Arrangements nearly complete for the Beaverhead county beef cattle tour set for October 4 and 5. Montana stockmen from Beaverhead Ravalli and Missoula counties plus California feeders will join the tour beginning at Andrus hotel in Dillon with stops at Wisdom and the Big Hole basin. The tour concludes with a barbecue at Clemon Brothers ranch served by Grasshopper cattleman George Harrison and led by E. E. Hazel of the Chamber of Commerce.
Mrs. Fannie Adams of Whitefish, assembly warden of the Diana Rebekah lodge, will visit the Melrose chapter tonight at 8. A banquet honoring her is planned for tomorrow at the Methodist church. Rebekahs and spouses are invited to attend. an exemplification of the Rebekah degree will follow the meeting.
D L Clancy Johnson Beaverhead County High School football coach and principal spoke to Rotary at St James guild hall on organized play. He noted athletics reduce military rejections, citing WWI rates near 40 percent and current selective service about 20 percent.
Tom Hartwig topped the bowling week with a 247 high single, per alley operators D. V. Paddock and Russ Smith. Floyd Vandegrift had 233 for second, Bill Jack 218 for third. Bud Hartwig scored 213 last Thursday but hasn’t topped it since. Next week leagues begin with several teams entered.
The Rev Calvin Logan will take the pulpit of the local Presbyterian church this Sunday. He comes from presbyteries in North Dakota and Wisconsin. Logan is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and Western Theological Seminary. Special services will be held.
