Noted Indian Fighter Visits Montana Again
Glendive welcomed Gen. Hugh L. Scott, former U S Army chief of staff, now in Indian service, en route to Poplar for Fort Peck Indian reservation inspection. Scott rode past Glendive 40 years ago when Gen. Merrill commanded a Yellowstone River cantonment opposite Glendive Creek. Merrill helped lay out Glendive and a major street bears his name. Scott, then a cavalry lieutenant, married Merrill’s daughter at Fort Lincoln in the Dakota Territory in the late 1860s. Scott later took part in many Indian campaigns.
