Beaverhead Fair Opens With Biggest 4 Percent Sale

Beaverhead, Dillon hosts an annual fair next week highlighting a three day event starting Tuesday. The show features Herefords and a noted sale of about a hundred head from famous buyers ranches.

Many Bayers Cattle Sale Attracts National Interest

Cattlemen from across the country show strong interest in a major Beaverhead sale set for October 16 in Dillon. About 100 head from the Bayers ranch in the Big Hole basin will be offered, including 85 bulls and 16 females in top condition. The lot features 12 grandsons of Panama 110th, Panama major winner, and multiple sons from notable bloodlines.

Dilion Examiner First Issue Debuts in Beaverhead County

Forty years ago on September 16 1891 the Dilion Examiner published its inaugural issue. Kross and Barker issued a seven column four page paper promising to develop Beaverhead County and Southern Montana with news and ads.

Big Hole Picnic Draws Large Beaverhead Lemhi Crowd

About 150 people attended the Beaverhead and Lemhi Mining associations picnic Sunday at the Gibbow battlefield in the Big Hole basin. Dr. Francis A. Thomson of the Montana School of Mines spoke on the silver question and mining issues.

Youth in Mont. address tied to California bad checks

A 19 year old identified as Buster Starr alias Dale Medsker of Livingston Montana, detained in the county jail in California, faced police as he allegedly cashed four government checks and attempted a fifth. He carried blank checks and forest service stationery and claimed authorization through letters from agency officials. Starr listed Livingston as home, though letters from his mother indicated Dillon Montana.

Beaverhead Board Reviews Sept 8 1931 Road Petitions

The Beaverhead board of county commissioners met September 8 1931 at 9:00 am with all members present. They received the finished contract for the viaduct south of Lima signed June 16. The fence question in Dutch Hollow remained unsettled. A 20 signature petition sought extending the county road two miles west to the Ajax ranch and then southwest to the U S forest boundary.

Dillon Rotary and Lions Plan Joint Meeting

Dillon Rotary club and the Big Hole Lions club planned a joint session for Saturday night September 26 at Jackson if the other club agrees. Speakers reviewed highway shutter plans between Dillon and the Big Hole basin and a Beaverhead Red Cross urgent clothing drive for needy families in eastern Montana and western North Dakota.

County Fair Ball Games Step Up at Beaverdam Fairgrounds

Daily ball games next Tuesday to Thursday feature Dillon’s nine and Madison county stars led by Ott Floyd Vandegrift Hoffman and Desonia. Opponents include Sheridan Twin Bridges Silver Star and other Madison county clubs. Admission is 25 cents.

Thousands Trout Planted in Lakes and Streams County

Lakes and streams across seven Montana counties served by the Anaconda State Fish Hatchery have been stocked with 672,860 game fish this season. Native black spotted trout four to five inches long were planted from Anaconda hatchery ponds to keep pace with demand.

Beaverhead County Fair Set to Open Next Tuesday

Beaverhead county readies its biggest fair to date with three days of exhibits and outdoor entertainment. Miss Myrl Orwin leads housing arrangements to accommodate crowds, while nightly shows and a Pacific Coast Carnival headline the week. Local baseball battles, racing events, novelty contests, and acts from Northwest fairs promise a record turnout.

Enthusiasm marked the Dillon P T A season opener at the high school gym with 75 in attendance. Mrs. F A Hazelbaker presided as plans for the year were outlined by Mrs. A F Waldorf. The program featured get acquainted games talks and musical selections by Mrs. W G Gilbert Mary E Farrell and Mrs. Earl Wheat. High school teachers hosted and coffee and doughnuts were served at the close.

Daily program lists a noon start with a high school band concert and an array of acts including Boots and Jocka Pony and Monkey, clowns, trapeze, and gymnastics. Running races span half mile to three miles, with acts from the Conley Trio and Tom and Jerry. Evening show and day ball game Beaverhead versus Madison at 10 30 a m.

Women Golf Tournament Set at Dillon Country Club

The Dillon Country Club women’s sports committee plans a golf tournament on Sunday October 4. Awards donated by Harry W. Turner and Carmel by the Sea California will be contested. Qualifying scores due by September 30 with nine holes played in company. The event is open to all women members in good standing.

Game Commission to Hold Meeting Helena on Sept. 17

Montana State Fish and Game commission members meet in Helena on Thursday September 17 to discuss the department’s financial condition open season areas for male Chinese pheasants and Hungarian partridges November 8 to 12 inclusive hatcheries and other business Chairman Thomas N Marlowe of Missoula chairs the panel. Dillion Legionnaires will attend the quarterly American Legion district convention at Twin Bridges next Saturday and Sunday. Posts from Dillon Wisdom Butte Anaconda Helena Deer Lodge Townsend Three Forks Whitehall Sheridan and Twin Bridges will participate in a two day program for visiting ex service members.

Turner tournament ties highlight Dillon club event

Ralph Harding and H M Brundage tied for first with a 74 net. Ed Hoffman placed second with 75 while Roy Forrester Frank O Keefe and Dr A H McFarland tied for fourth at 76. Prizes include a $20 Kodak, a $16 traveling bag, $10 golf clubs and a $5 club. Awards will be awarded after a playoff.

Backus Wins Dillon Gun Club Cup At Regular Shoot

William Backus took the Dillon Gun Club Cup at the regular shoot held last Sunday at the fairgrounds. He topped Roy Forrester and L. H. Smith who scored 48x50. Handicaps gave Backus the highest net score. The winner has shot at traps only since last spring. Dr E G Free won the mise and out event with L H Smith second and W D Ross third. Other scores in the 60 third event followed.
