Beaverhead County Schools Open With Record Registration
Beaverhead county schools reopened with about 760 students at the Dillon high school and public schools. Training school noon figure stood at 452 with 187 in primary and 265 in upper grades, up from last year. High school enrollment near 290, similar to 288 last year, while two new instructors joined the training staff: Stella Glasser in art and Grace Redburn in music. Elizabeth Shotwell resumes primary training supervision after a leave. Classes run 8:30 a.m. to 8:21 p.m., with Brick Breeden in charge of men's athletics for the high school and Normal College as this year’s coach.

Miss Ruperta Metzel Dies At Ruby Ranch Home
Miss Ruperta Metzel daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Metzel died Sunday at her parents ranch near Ruby. The funeral will be held at Laurin today. She was well known locally having visited the Henry Cahill home and attended school in Dillon.

Trio of Auto Thieves Lose Race to Cops
A noon crowd watched three alleged car thieves challenge deputies to a foot race as a southbound Oregon Short Line train pulled into Melrose station. Burt Talen Dan Lynch and Frank Burns allegedly stole a car in Butte then ditched it and fled. Two runners reached the freight yard finish line greeted by Undersheriff Carl Hartwig. the third escaped toward Montana street before being overtaken.

Former Big Hole Basin Woman Dies in Portland
Nellie Pendleton Stewart formerly Miss Nellie Pendleton daughter of Mrs J H Shaw of Wisdom dies in Portland Oregon after an operation. Body returned to Wisdom for funeral at Presbyterian church and burial in Wisdom cemetery. Born in the Big Hole basin eighty eight years ago she lived in Dillon and Logan Utah and had resided in Oregon in recent years.

City Council Sets Traffic Rules and Water Billing
The regular September session ordered strict enforcement of double parking prohibitions and addressed water ordinances. Water bills are due by the 10th of each quarter, or water will be shut off, and water is turned off to allow firemen full pressure. Various city claims and supplies were approved.
Annual History Picnic at Barratt’s Labor Day Held
The 17th annual historical picnic sponsored by Beaverhead chapter D A R drew over 75 attendees at Barratt's on Labor Day afternoon. Speakers included Mrs Charles Passmore state regent and Beaverhead regent Mrs T B Luebben. pioneers Kate Poindex Lynn Michael Henneberry Barrett James Kirkpatrick Frank Eliel and Laura T Scott contributed. The program opened with a basket lunch and a bugle call invocation flag salute led by Tommy Luebben and Craig Anderson. The gathering noted Barratt’s origin as a Lewis and Clark camp site and its role as gateway to Ryan’s.

A Studebaker sedan carrying five Butte residents burned after an accident 15 miles north of Dillon on state highway Saturday night. Three injured occupants Harvey Kelly Mrs Georgiana Boyd and Miss Catherine Rogan were taken to Barrett hospital. The truck that forced the car off the road fled the scene. Additional Dillon incidents involved Hiram Brundage Jr and Walter Brundage whose car ran off an unmarked detour near Wolf Creek Saturday night.

Beaverhead County’s 1981 fair will feature hundreds of exhibits and a premier outdoor entertainment program. D. A. Galt leads planning with nightly Conley acts and a new grandstand, plus a public speaking system, carnival by Pacific States Shows, and a varied racing program. Admission is 50 cents at the gate, 25 cents for the night show. Entries for races and events should be submitted a week before opening.

Small Cabin Damaged By Fire On Barnett Avenue
William McGehee's small house on Barnett Avenue was damaged by flames after a cigarette tossed on a bed near 9 PM. Dillon volunteer fire department responded to the first alarm in weeks, extinguishing the fire around 1:30 AM. the bed reportedly smoldered overnight before bursting into blaze, leaving significant damage but not total loss.

About 190 Herefords from the Bayers Hereford ranch at Wisdom will head to Dillon for a public sale on October 15. A. C. Bayers announces 86 bulls and 15 females will be offered including horned and polled lines, with 12 Panama descendants and 12 Generous Nebonazi sons among the registered stock. The sale, led by famed auctioneer Fred Reppert, is expected to draw buyers from distant points and be Beaverhead County’s largest registered cattle sale.

Beaverhead county commissioners considered two road petitions in regular September business. One sought official designation of the open highway from Henrys Lake to Red Rock, with viewers appointed. Montana monthly bulletin shows improvements and emergency loans
The Helena based Dun and Company bulletin reports last month’s gains over July and August 1930 with eight failures and 88 830 in liabilities. Improvements in range and feed conditions are noted in dry areas. The department of agriculture will qualify 29 Montana counties for emergency feed loans amid slower sales and collections. Daring bank robbery targets Sheridan State Bank
A bandit robbed Sheridan State Bank last Friday afternoon taking over 2600 dollars in currency with an accomplice believed to aid escape. He forced Helena salesman George Schotte to drive him from Helena, then fled in a stolen car found abandoned four miles from Sheridan near Wisconsin creek after firing at the cashier John Gilbert who shot at the bandit through the windshield. A $100 bill was left in the car for Schotte who returned it to the bank. Officers traced the escape route but did not pursue via Twin Bridges roads.

Pioneer Woman Kate Burfiend Dies in Dillon
Mrs. Kate M. Burfiend longtime Dillon resident and pioneer matron died at home on South Washington street after a lingering illness. Born in Germany April 9 1867 she came to the United States as a young girl and moved to Dillon in 1888 with her husband Henry Burfiend a notable local businessman. Survived by three daughters Mrs George Banks Mrs H H Bates Mrs Bertha Elliott and a son Dr George Burfiend the family noted in a Grace Methodist Episcopal church funeral with Eastern Star members at Mountain View cemetery.

Rural Teachers Meet in Dillon Friday and Saturday
Beaverhead county rural school teachers gathered in Dillon for a two day meeting called by County Superintendent Gladys Garr. State leaders Elizabeth Ireland Regina Kohten and Marguerite Hood addressed rural education topics including new course study geography social studies music appreciation and grade school singing. Principal W W Wahl spoke on the Montana Education Association western division and announced the divisional convention dates in Helena October 22 28 and 24.
