Sportsmen urged to be careful with guns next season

The Beaverhead Sportsmen's Association warns sportsmen to exercise utmost caution when hunting on ranchers lands as upland bird seasons begin and migratory birds follow. Cattle and livestock losses have occurred in past years, and ranchers are largely not posted. Migratory waterfowl should be plentiful on Beaverhead waters while upland birds are scarce. fishing remains good on the Beaverhead and Big Hole rivers as Loch Levins and natives are set for planting.

Jess White Proves He Is Alive in Public Appearance

County to Sell Lands at Session Following Tax Deed

Beaverhead county will auction lands acquired by tax deed tomorrow at 10 o clock in the county courthouse. The sale follows a board of commissioners order and notices in the Examiner. The public auction will take place at the courthouse front door after four publication notices detailing the property. The special Aug 17 meeting set appraisals for all lands acquired by tax deed and other county property eligible for sale.

Beaverhead county commissioners hold regular session September 5 and 6 1939 with Commissioners Hartwig Henneberry and Jackson and Clerk Baker in attendance. McIntyre mortgage redemption of 22.80 for Section 7 Township 10 South Range 11 West approved and deed ordered. Regular session continued September 6 with all members present and an extra session ordered by motion.

Warren Sheppard Dies After Wounding at His Garage

Warren W. Sheppard, 59, died at Barrett hospital at 5 p m last Wednesday after a bullet wound through his head. A coroner's inquest Friday found the death caused by a bullet wound in a personal crisis. He was found sitting in the street in front of the garage he operated around 11.

Dillon Elks plan fall events and New Year’s Eve social

Dillon Elks lodge discussed fall activities at last night’s regular meeting. Plans include an anniversary celebration on Oct 28 with a special meeting and initiation, followed by a social event. Members were contacted by the membership committee led by Paul Temple and others. A smoker and lunch are set for the next meeting on Sept 26. Tentative New Year’s Eve arrangements are for Ellis and their ladies only.

Jud Best Speaks on Tax Problems at Rotary Dinner

Judson P. Best Beaverhead county deputy assessor spoke at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner on tax issues and his office work. He urged forming a local taxpayers association to study the tax structure and improve taxpayer county office understanding. The group would provide a digest of valuations classifications and tax data from 1914 to now as compiled by his office.

Dillon lodge No.16 AF and AM opened the new term with a first meeting at the Masonic hall after the summer recess. Dillon chapter No.8 RAM will meet Saturday night September 16 in its first session. Delegates’ reports to the annual grand lodge were presented, with similar reports expected at the chapter meeting.

Forgery Case Leads to One Year Prison Term

R E Clark age 49 pleaded guilty in district court to a forgery charge and was sentenced to a year in the state penitentiary by Judge Henry G Rodgers. Clark was arrested Aug 8 for cashing a check bearing a fictitious signature of Blaz Sugar Centennial valley rancher and was moved to Deer Lodge Thursday by Sheriff Paul H Temple. Joe Narango received 60 days for petty larceny from a tourist's car. He is serving the term at the county jail. Ben Breece also faced petty larceny charges and 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to stealing cooking utensils from the Eric Hansen ranch. The real name suspected as Arch Swaford. Phil Lyons of Lima reported the theft of his 1939 black Chrysler coupe license 18-1735.

Beaverhead County Farmers May Classify Non allotment Wheat Farms

Beaverhead county farmers may classify farms as non allotment wheat farms under a 1940 AAA change. Operators may grow wheat as hay or cover crops while participating in the conservation program. Deductions apply if harvest exceeds usual acreage or 10 acres, whichever is larger. Non allotment farms are insurable with the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation. Operators have until September 30 to file.

A high wind last Monday ripped large limbs from trees in Dillon and residential areas. A heavy rain swept Beaverhead County and was reported statewide. Harvesting in the valley was delayed by the storm.

Miss Gladys Tofte starts as Beaverhead county home demonstration agent succeeding Miss Conlon after Miss Stone’s resignation. She will serve six months then be Montana agent-at-large for the rest of the year. Tofte, a North Dakota State College graduate with a master’s from Iowa State, plans the autumn program and an Oct 16 achievement day.

Beaverhead County ranchers report strong demand from Illinois Iowa and Ohio with livestock prices well ahead of fall expectations. Large outfits sold 1939 lambs while Idaho shipments from Armstead and Lemhi County continue. Emma Yeaman the Idaho sheep queen was among shippers as 75 000 Beaverhead and Madison lambs expected to ship soon.

Dillon Woman Dies of Car Wreck Injuries

Beaverhead post of the American Legion plans a strong fall program with a mining district convention likely in October. Department Commander George M. Gosman will join local officers T. E. Gilbert and C. A. Bechler at the regular meeting tomorrow night as the post aims for its best record this year. State officers will attend the national convention in Chicago September 25 to 26, leading the Montana delegation.

A stack of new straw on the Roscoe Cornell ranch south of Dillon was destroyed by a fire of undetermined origin Saturday afternoon. The threshing crew returned to work at 1 PM after lunch when the stack ignited at the crown. Firefighters and crew moved equipment to prevent spread.

Miss Marguerite Caldwell Dies After Moose Creek Hill Crash

Miss Marguerite Caldwell a 45 year old Dillon resident and Lewistown school instructor died Sunday from injuries after her car plunged over an embankment on Moose Creek hill north of Melrose Aug 30. She was brought to Dillon with serious injuries initially reported as not serious.

Dillon public schools and Montana State Normal college training school opened the new term with higher enrollment. Grade school registration on the first day reached 466, up 20 from last year, as reported by Superintendent Paul Anderson.
