Beaverhead forest fire totals show 28 fires this season with 11 man caused. Supervisor Willey notes higher man caused percentage than regional 32 to 40. Fires burned 21.7 acres, largest on Ruby Creek in Sheridan district with seven acres lost. Rain reduced danger but cautions remain.
Bruce A. Risley secretary of the Water Users Irrigation company announced a 15000 loan from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation to fund canal work from the West Fork of the Madison river into the Centennial valley. The loan aims to increase water supply for the Lima reservoir, with Chauncey Y. Dodds confirming the funding.
The Montana State Normal College training school that serves Dillon public schools will start the new term Monday morning. Superintendent Paul Anderson reports preparations are complete and three new instructors join the faculty. Janet Dunn of Ann Arbor will lead eighth graders, Ruth Smith of Dickinson will replace Mae Obenland, and Ruth Eklund of Moorhead will teach in the new lineup.
Warren W. Sheppard a Dillon garage operator was found with a bullet wound to the head near his home and remained alive but weaker at Barrett Hospital more than a week later Police found a .45 pistol at his home and believe he shot himself before collapsing in front of the Dillon Motors garage
Charles E. Ledebur, 59, a former Dillon resident, died in Butte after a brief illness. Funeral plans pending. Lillian R. Free of Chapel Hill, N C, visiting Dr. E. G. Free. A Dillon car owned by W C Southard was stolen from in front of his home Thursday night and found undamaged the next day by Silver Bow County authorities. Mr and Mrs D V Paddock and family with Mrs Mary Paddock and Miss Mary Tait departed Thursday for California for the winter.
The Rev. Victor Lewis conducted his first services at St. James Episcopal church on Sunday with his wife and two children arriving from Gillette Wyoming after accepting the parish call. He succeeds the Rev. H N Tragitt now in Minot North Dakota. Lewis is a University of Toronto graduate acclaimed as a church worker and rector.
A well off New York couple in Helena admitted they had never heard of Glacier Park and did not know its location. After a local resident's sermon on the two parks they decided to visit both Glacier Park and Yellowstone on their trip across Montana.
Miss Elizabeth Ballard departed this week for Whitefish to join the teaching staff as a new member.

Miss Anna Catherine Moser arrives from Kalispell to join the State Normal College as dean of women. She holds degrees from Montana State Normal College, the State University of Montana, UC, and Columbia graduate work. She has 10 years of teaching and will lead educational psychology classes and personnel work. Autumn quarter opens September 25. training school term begins September 11. Beaverhead County High School uses college facilities, with swimming to start September 27.
Terry F C Browning prominent former Dillon business man dies Saturday in Ogden hospital from an acute abdominal ailment. He helped organize Dillon Elks lodge No 1554 and served as its first exalted ruler. Born Ogden January 1 1889 he and his brother Harry toured vaudeville before moving to Dillon 29 years ago to run a business together until Harry’s death in 1930.
Beaverhead County High School began a new term with 240 students on the first day, about 20 more than last year’s opening figure. Principal Conrad Orr noted overall registration should match last year as classes start in temporary basement quarters, with the new building due this winter and the 1940 diploma class to graduate in the new auditorium. New staff include James OConnor for English and drama and Miss La Vantia Bedford in charge of the commercial department.
The Dillon Chamber of Commerce reports on a proposed highway from Salmon Idaho to Whitehall Montana via Dillon. The plan connects Salmon City on the west slope of the continental divide with Whitehall on the east, aiding access to the coast through the Salmon river canyon.
John Barton stars as Jeeter Lester in Tobacco Road at the Broadway theater in Butte on Friday and Saturday September 15 and 16 with a Saturday matinee. The play, adapted from Erskine Caldwell's novel, has set box office records in New York and major cities across the United States.
Beaverhead county rural schools opened their regular term yesterday morning with most schools continuing from last year. County superintendent Miss Margaret Sweeney announced the term's teachers for each locality including Bannack Nelson and River side. Earl Fairbanks serves as principal at Lakeview and Monida lists include Ethel Kennedy and Alice Nelson among others.
Dr A C Morrow of Dillon, a veteran veterinarian, spoke at the Rotary Club dinner on meat inspection. He traced ancient roots to Egyptian times and noted some U S cities lack official meat inspection while citing Germany as a pioneer in modern practice.
The state highway patrol began testing 170 motorists with two or more traffic convictions. Tests include eyesight, a driving tryout, and a highway regulations quiz. Those failing may have licenses revoked after review by the highway commission. appeals to court are allowed.
Dillon gunners shine in regional shoots. Ted Renfro and Guy Chieseman tie for high honors in Pocatello’s P I T A event with near perfect scores. Herman Peterson places runnerup in Casper singles, wins doubles shootoff, claims high all around with 382 of 400. Pete Westergard also competed in Casper.
Helena Montana reports a strong farm labor year with 2 205 placements in the first seven months of 1939 up 326 from the same period last year. John W Nelson head of the Montana unemployment compensation commission announced figures reflecting continued demand for transient labor despite floods of job seekers.
