Infant Dies After Bathtub Scalding At Dillon Residence

Douglas Downing aged one and a half died at a Butte hospital after both he and his brother Norman, two and a half, were scalded in hot water when a bath faucet was turned on. Norman remained in critical condition. The infant’s body was taken to Brundage Funeral Home in Dillon. Chester Downing, a former Air Force instructor, had just returned from Florida with his family.

Homer Turner Elected President of State Range Group

Homer Turner of Dillon was elected president of the Intermountain section of the American Society of Range Management at the group's annual convention in Great Falls. Turner, known in Dillon for work with the Soil Conservation Service since 1950 and later with Rock Island Oil Co. ranch on the Blacktail, is now with the Agricultural Division of The Anaconda Company.

Market Stabilization Study Committee Formed by MSGA

Montana Stockgrowers Association creates the Market Stabilization Study committee with Alex Christie of Grant as a member and Clarence Walton of Wilsall as chairman. Four 4 H Members Win Awards at Montana Club Congress

Four Beaverhead 4 H members earned honors at the Montana 4 H Club Congress held during the County Fair week in Bozeman. Donna Andrus received a blue ribbon in demonstration, Clara Jensen earned blue ribbons in clothing and food judging, and Bernard Jensen took a red ribbon in tractor driving.

Beaverhead County Fair Awards Total Premiums Near Two Thousand

The 1957 Beaverhead County Fair records show nearly $2 000 in premiums. About $1,300 was paid in the Open Division on Labor Day as exhibitors collected eateries. Blue ribbons dominated many departments with a few purple and green ribbon awards noted for select entries.

Western Montana College Begins Football Practice Season

Western Montana College in Dillon starts football practice on Saturday Sept 14 led by Coach George McCormick with 15 returning lettermen and 20 freshmen and transfers. The opener is Sept 21 at Rexburg against Ricks College in Idaho followed by a home game Sept 27 against Westminster College. Conference play opens Oct 5 with Homecoming vs Carroll College and continues through Nov 9 with a non conference game at Harlowtown vs Malmstrom AFB.

Enrollment Rise Noted in Dillon Schools

Dillon enrollment reaches 1000 with Beaverhead County High School at 320 and Dillon Public Schools 681. The high school sophomore class has 106 students, the grade school fourth grade 89, and first grade 88. Compared to last year the high school is similar while the grade school increases by 25 students.

R. M. Barrett Trophy Shoot at Beaverhead Range

The annual R M Barrett registered trophy shoot will be held at the Beaverhead Gun Club range near Dillon on Oct. 5 and 6 according to club president Herman R Peterson. Claybird shooters from Montana are expected to compete. Events run over two days include a trophy event for ladies.

Youth Champions at 1957 Beaverhead County Fair

The Beaverhead County Fair honors 1957 youth champions across cattle and sheep divisions. Jim Giles earns best female in registered breeding beef with a $5 award from the Federal Land Bank.
