Lawrence Reynolds win top prizes in Jaycee rodeo contests

Lawrence of Missoula captured the 500 dollar high six saddle bucking prize and led saddle bronc with 542 points. Benny Reynolds of Melrose won the all around cowboy award. The rodeo concluded Monday afternoon with multiple event results and several ties among contestants from Montana and nearby regions.

Minerals Suspends Tungsten Mining Operations in Co

Minerals Engineering Company will suspend tungsten mining in Beaverhead County this week due to falling prices from foreign tungsten. About 80 to 90 workers will be affected as the firm suspends operations started in 1951 with a payroll of up to 1.5 million dollars annually and a current tax bill of about 175 thousand dollars.

Winning Livestock Entries Named at County Fair Youth Show

Judges named the fat steer shown by Robert Polish champion of the Youth Livestock Show at the County Fair. Miss Gayle Wheat took reserve. Open division champion bull was by A. C. Byers of Twin Bridges and Giles Brothers won champion female. Bill Slanger swept youth show sheep with fat lamb breeding male and breeding female. Robert Polish won best entry in range management. Riverside Rustlers 4-H booth judged best in range display. Sagebrush 4-H won best group board. Additional youth winners included Mac Simpson Donna Andrus Gerald Jones Francis Schindler Harris Wheat in fat beef calves and Jim Robertson Jack McMurchy Paul Chism Bill Huntsman in fat lambs. Best champion breeding female in cattle went to Dick Stauduhar. Mary Garrison won senior beef showmanship. Veronica Bolick junior. Jack McMurchy senior sheep showmanship. Billy Slanger junior.

Contract Let for Monida Superhighway Start

The State Highway Commission awarded two major contracts near Monida. Peter Kiewit Sons Co. won $1,172,599 for 12.08 miles of interstate highway with a bituminous surface. C. B. Laud Construction Co. secured $148,617 for two bridges over Union Pacific tracks and near Monida.

Bright Colorful Parade Delights Large Montana Crowd

An hour long parade through Dillon's business district thrilled a packed crowd preceding the rodeo finals. Rodeo Queen Mary Garrison of Glen and attendants led amid cowboy cavalier honor guards. Local groups from Beaverhead and Dillon joined out of town entries including Carey Riding Club and the Oriental Band.

County Board Endorses Jackson-Dillon Highway Priority

Beaverhead county commissioners adopted a resolution supporting the ongoing priority of constructing unfinished Jackson Dillon highway segments and urged early completion from the current oil surface to the Harrison ranch in the Grasshopper valley. A copy was sent to Louis Chittim, state division engineer. The board also approved renting office space for the county sanitarian and appointed Tom Robertson as Justice of the Peace for Wisdom Township.

Atkins Outlines Bangs Testing Plan for Beav erhead Ranchers

County Agent Ed Atkins explains a pilot program for brucellosis re certification in Beav erhead County. Each breeding cow would carry an identification number applied during shipping. slaughter time testing would screen for infection and halt further ranch testing if negative. If infected, the ranch herd would be tested, delaying costs.

Miss Carla Andrus won the Safe Driver of the Week award from Brown's Union Service and Beaverhead County Traffic Safety Council, receiving 10 gallons of Union 76 gasoline and a certificate. She urged mandatory high school driving instruction to curb unsafe habits and noted adults cause more fatal accidents than teens, while praising local teen drivers.
