President S E B Davis announces 72 students earned two or more grade points per credit across 11 or more credits. Laura Jane Osborne of Dillon and nine other Dillon students shine among 72, with Butte leading among cities and Beaverhead county contributing four honorees.

Word has been received that Will Rogers of Los Angeles California was instantly killed in May while cleaning a gun. He and his wife lived in Dillon a few years ago and will be remembered by many.

Dance at Glen Saturday Night Is Attraction

A regular Saturday night dance at Glen on the Butte-Dillon highway is planned for next Saturday if weather allows. Fay's Hawaiians, Dillon's popular orchestra, will provide the music in the open air pavilion attracting large crowds from the county.

Beaverhead schools to begin term after summer break

Beaverhead county schools and Beaverhead high along with training and rural schools will open the regular term next Tuesday September 8. Lima Wisdom and other communities start Tuesday. Beav erhead high expects large freshman enrollment with most faculty returning under Principal W W Wahl. New work includes farm shop and animal husbandry in Smith Hughes program. Superintendent Charles Henry remains in charge. Continued on page 4.

Thompson Funeral Held Friday

The funeral of Henry Thompson who died Tuesday night at his ranch near Lima was held Friday at two o'clock at the Thompson home. Evergreen Masonic lodge of Lima conducted services with Rev. George N. Tragitt of Dillon preaching. Interment followed at the Lima cemetery in the family plot. Pallbearers included Willis Martinell, Paul Martinell, William Knox, Pascal J. Bimat, Paul Garr, Chris Peterson, Leo H. Truax, and William B. Gleed. Honorary pallbearers were prominent local and neighboring figures.

Three Boys Questioned on Theft Charges in Local Incidents

Three youths were taken into custody by city and county officers after alleged break ins at D A Galt s miniature golf booth and the Montana Hardware store. One boy reportedly confessed implicating three others including a fourth who cannot be located. Conflicting stories over loot hinder progress as investigators continue inquiries.

Stores Close Monday in Observance of Labor Day

Dillon business houses and offices will be closed next Monday for Labor Day. No local celebration is planned but many residents will take the long weekend to visit other points by car.

Dr Davis Publishes Fifth Book on Elementary Curriculum

Dr Sheldon E Davis released Heaching the Elementary Curriculum in August through Macmillan New York. The five hundred fifty page volume continues the series with practical teaching ideas drawn from Montana observations and extensive education literature.

Beaverhead County Opens Annual Championship Tourney

The Beaverhead county board of commissioners will meet next Tuesday in its regular monthly session. The meeting, usually held the first Monday, is postponed due to Labor Day. Claims against the county must be filed with Clerk and Recorder Albert H. Baker by 5 o'clock this afternoon.

County Farm Among Best Organized Institutions In State

Beaverhead county news reports the county farm as well run with 133 acres, 92 tons hay, 641 bushels oats, 267 barley, and a garden producing potatoes and vegetables. It lists 21 registered cows, 23 dairy cows, 10 work horses, and yearly milk output. An inmate count averages 28, with county upgrades including a new BeWer system and heating plant to reduce costs. Two forgers named Jack Evans and Emil Hansen were arrested in Dillon for cashing counterfeit checks from a non existent Boise bank, tied to $350 loss.

Smith Hughes Oject Boys Making Good

Beaverhead county high school boys excel in project work. Several grew potatoes for seed and earned certification from state inspector Isaacs with four of five examined. Ed Heikkila Neal Sullivan George Shaffner and Andy Gilbert sold certified seed spade. Carl Hansen Jr Armestead raised sheep with first year's lambs and wool nearly covering 60 ewes and two bucks bought last spring. William Irvine funded the projects amid below normal conditions.

County Fair Topic At Rotary Meeting

Beaverhead county fair was discussed by Tom H. DuBois and D. A. Galt of the fair board at the weekly Rotary club. Galt outlined entertainment features while DuBois spoke on commercial and agricultural exhibits. Earl Fairbanks spoke on Middle West conditions after returning from Iowa. Galt chaired the meeting.

Baverhead county’s annual fair grows daily with more exhibitors and larger displays than planned. D A Galt leads the fair board’s entertainment, promising top features including daily morning baseball, Idaho motorcycle races, and ten aerial acts near the grandstand. Space in the First National warehouse is filling with commercial and educational displays while outside merchants and wholesale houses reserve booths for a broad exposition.

Highway link completed from Dillon to Armstead on schedule

The 36 mile stretch from Butte to the Idaho line, including the Dillon Armstead section, was finished by J C Maguire crews on Monday. The project meets a Sept 1 deadline with grading by Morrison Knudsen of Boise and gravel surfacing underway, expected to be sealed next year.

Forest Fire in Beaverhead Near Wise River Subdued

A forest fire in Beaverhead National Forest near Wise River Saturday was quickly controlled by Ranger Pete Piatford. The fire covered more than a small acreage but was brought under center with rapid action despite difficult conditions in the Beareroad area.
