Peder G. Nelson an old-time Beaverhead Valley rancher died at his home last Saturday after years of farming in the region. He was known for his long service to local ranching and community work. He leaves a widow and several children.
The 36 year resident of Beaverhead county, born in Denmark December 18 1867, died last Saturday at home after a lengthy illness. He came to the United States as a young man, settled in Beaverhead in 1897, became naturalized in 1898, ran a Dillon bakery for years, then shifted to ranching on the north Dillon property where he lived until his death.
Beaverhead county held three Labor Day rodeos in Jackson Lima and Wise River drawing large crowds from southwestern Montana. The Jackson show sponsored by Ted Harper Post American Legion featured standout bronc riding with five riders knocked unconscious on opening day and continued thrills through finals under manager Jim Johnson.
Donald Rolfe, son of a Forest Ranger, died after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a .22 rifle while on a rabbit hunt with James Woody, 11, at a sheep camp in the Warm Springs creek district Big Hole basin.
Beaverhead county high school opened its regular term with 280 students, 12 fewer than opening day last year. Principal W. W. Wahl expects final enrollment near last fall's total. Freshman enrollment is normal, and a new class schedule adds home economics and four morning periods with two after lunch.
Warren Box of Pony a CCC worker at the Alder camp may lose sight in one eye after a car driven by Earl Tedrick crashed into a cow crossing state highway five miles south of Dillon. The cow shattered the windshield and a piece of glass entered Box's eye. the cow was killed after being struck by a second vehicle.
A fire Sunday morning gutted the Weavehead blacksmith shop on Center Street. The blaze, of unknown origin, awoke a sleeping man on the second floor as crews battled the flames. Fire officials investigated the cause and noted extensive damage to the building and its contents.
Washington dispatches report L. W. Roberts presented to President Roosevelt a proposal to build 702 post offices at a total cost of 62 million dollars. The plan aims to accelerate job creation under the public works program and may include the local Billings project as part of rapid federal construction.
W. K. Pryor pleaded guilty to burglary in district court before Judge Lyman H. Bennett and received an 18 month state prison sentence. He is linked as an accomplice to Charles Raw, who was sentenced last week to one year for the same crime at the Luella Stickney burglary. Both men were sent to Deer Lodge to begin serving terms. W. F. Jeffry pleaded guilty to receiving stolen goods related to the Stickney case. sentence pending.
A group from Dillon traveled to Jackson for a two day rodeo staged by the American Legion with James Johnson at the helm. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Alex Crosby and son James Jackson, Eilene Jackson, Eloise Olmstead, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Lloyd, Ted Oliver, Toke Contway, Melvyn Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Al Groshean and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Diggle Emerick, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hoerning, Miss Helen Hoerning, Berg Christensen and family, W. H. Mitchell, Miss Winnie Mitchell, Albert Baker and many others.
Complaints arise that night calls to police go unanswered. Dillon has only two night patrolmen who must cover the city and the headquarters. A business man proposes electric lights on building tops to flash for officer calls, enabling the central office to direct the nearest available officer promptly.
Archie Main a well known Dillon hotel man died in Los Angeles last Thursday after a brief illness. A wire to his brother George Main of this city confirmed the death.
Two Lima youngsters aged two and four miraculously escaped serious harm after tumbling from a third floor window of the Commercial hotel in Butte. The boys James and Robert Roush were waving to their mother on the street when they leaned too far and fell to the cement sidewalk, screaming as they landed. Their father, in the room, had warned them moments earlier.
Miss Mae Tallent and Miss Alice Sykles have leased and taken over Musselshell Valley hospital at Roundup from Mrs Mayme Urick. Tallent, a Dillon nurse and Murray hospital graduate, is daughter of Mrs Leo Tallent and has practiced in Dillon since graduation.
Prof. H. M. Sayre of Montana School of Mines seeks information from settlers on precontact Montana Indians. He highlights rock rings and tepee traces as vanished evidences, notes game drives near cliffs where buffalo were driven, and points to arrowheads knives scrapers and axes recovered from such sites around Big Timber and the Milk River region. Graves are noted but rarely found.
Friends of Mrs. Leon Grannis mourn her death in Long Beach California where she had lived for 14 years. Born Grace Hinckley in Gallatin Missouri she lived in Dillon with her parents and worked at the Dillon Tribune before her marriage to Leon Grannis of Dillon. Survived by husband two sons parents sister and brother with an uncle J E Phillips county coroner.
Professor Robert E. Albright returning from Stanford research discussed the NRA program at the Dillon Rotary Club dinner. He described west coast confidence in the program and noted student attitudes toward the Orient and Central Europe as less assured. The session focused on club organization and membership classifications. Dr. W H Stephan chaired the meeting.
Beaverhead county rural instructors gathered in Dillon for the annual teachers institute run by state education officials. State Superintendent Elisabeth Ireland and rural supervisors Marguerite Hood and Alice Mattegon outlined study plans while County Superintendent Nell Doyle aided. Sessions took place in the old training school assembly room. Outside Dillon, teachers include Servantus Kerr at Bannack and Mil.
Washington moves toward repeal with 340,310 in favor and 141,876 against from 2,079 of 2,682 precincts. Wets claimed delegates to the constitutional convention in most districts, except two eastern counties Whitman Asotin Garfield and Columbia. Postmaster General Farley announced from the national level.
Dillon's city council will meet in regular session to decide the fate of the proposed lighting district which would place street lights at every residential intersection. Protests against the project will be weighed to determine if 51 percent of real estate is affected. The council will also act on other ordinances including a new driver permit requirement now in effect. City Treasurer F C McFadden said permits are available from the treasurer and a few drivers have yet to obtain them.
The Montana state fish and game commission will meet in Helena on September 7 to set dates for Chinese pheasant and Hungarian partridge seasons. A split season is proposed with tentative dates from October 29 to 31 and November 25 to December 7. No upland game third season is planned this year. Sage hen season closed earlier this week. The commission will consider stream opening and closing rules, though no petitions have been filed yet.
