Montana Honor Roll Boosts Dillon Students

Ninety six students earned places on the Montana normal college honor roll for the summer quarter, including Dillon's Sam Cappious and Helen Ida Best with Ward McVay among others. The listing reflects strong student effort across the nine weeks and shows a sizable portion of the campus's enrollment achieving high grades. In other news, a Norwegian family may gain over $10,000 as a bank book tied to Ole Peterson is discovered in Beaverhead county. letters of administration are sought in his estate valued at more than $10,000 deposited in Dillon's First National Bank. Peterson, once a Beaverhead ranch partner, died April 16 after leaving his fortune undisclosed for years.

Great Rodeo Assured at Lima Ranch

One of Montana's outstanding rodeos of the year is slated for Lima next Sunday and Monday as Bill Gray presents another wild west show at the George Roe ranch east of Lima. Horses and steers unwilling to be ridden, calves uncooperative at roping, and cows resisting milking will be in the arena, with chutes ready to deliver action throughout. Manager Gray adds extra features beyond the standard events, including races and novelty contests scheduled between regular programs.

Beaverhead Wheat Quota Figures for Beaverhead County

Beaverhead county's wheat production average used for the county allotment under the agricultural adjustment administration plan is 34700 bushels. Determined by the United States crop reporting board, the five year average from 1928 through 1932 inclusive guides the quota. The county allotment is set at 64 percent of this average.

Rancher acquitted in water theft case in Beaverhead County

John Platt, Beaverhead valley rancher, was acquitted in justice court of illegally taking water from the Canyper ditch. The two day trial featured testimony from witnesses and was presided by Judge Louis Stahl with defense by T. E. Gilbert and state by J. E. Kelly. Platt was among three valley ranchers acquitted in the same charge. Meanwhile Charles Raw pleaded guilty to burglary and received a one year state prison term from District Judge Lyman H. Bennett after being linked to a home break in with Nurse Luella Stickney absent. Pryor, arraigned on burglary, sought counsel and allegedly attempted escape from county jail, later confessing his role.

Beaverhead county gears up for the sixth annual rodeo and barbecue in Jackson next Sunday and Labor Day under Ted Harper Post of the American Legion. Veteran promoter Jim Johnson will manage with four chutes in operation daily. The show promises non stop thrills for a record crowd as Jim Johnson, an arena manager of long experience, is assisted by a seasoned team.

Legion to Convene in Dillon for Mining Zone Meeting

Legionnaires of the mining district gather in Dillon on Saturday September 16 for a quarterly convention hosted by Beaverhead post. Over 100 veterans and Legion auxiliary members expected. Silver Bow drum and bugle corps of Butte to participate. Delegates T. E. Gilbert Parke Scott J. C. Faller attend Great Falls state convention. Three Escapes Three Captures Form Record of Tony Mangus

A beaverhead county youth Tony Mangus aged 21 has escaped three times from confinement in three months. He was recaptured in Charleston West Virginia and brought back to Montana under custody of a U S marshal. Local authorities monitor his movements closely at the county jail in Helena.

Frank Little to Fight in Coast Boxing Tourney

Frank Little a Dillon athlete and Oregon Agricultural College star in football and boxing left for Portland to train for the Pacific Coast A A U boxing tournament set for September 5 and 6. He won the heavyweight collegiate title last spring and will train under Tom Louttit. Girl Scouts of Troop 2 will meet Thursday instead of Saturday.

Ted Renfro Returns From Vandalia Shoot Returns for Jackson Exhibits

Dillon Gun club star Ted Renfro, national and international trapshoot champion, arrived from Vandalia Ohio after competing in the Great American shoot. He will perform exhibitions at a Jackson rodeo next Sunday and Monday, adding prestige to a two day event by Ted Harper post of the American Legion. Renfro recently set a world record with 242 consecutive handicap targets including 99 at Butte and 100 at Ogden and was named the greatest doubles shooter by writer Jimmy Robinson.

Mines Professor Sees Historic Sites Around Armstead

Prof. H. M. Sayre of the Montana School of Mines with Mrs. J. W. Scott inspected ancient Indian mounds trails cairns and relics near Armstead. He plans another trip and asks locals to report Indian markers to Mrs. Scott or Prof. Sayre.

Civil War Vet William G. Blair Dies in Beaverhead County

William G. Blair a Beaverhead County pioneer and long time rancher on Horse Prairie died about 2 a.m. Sunday at his South Washington Street home after months of poor health. Born November 14 1843 in Albany Kentucky he enlisted in 1861 served in the 12th Kentucky Infantry and was wounded at Fort Fisher before joining General Sherman.

Beaverhead county held a three day sage hen open season drawing many local and out of town hunters from Butte and Anaconda. The hunt led to a material decrease in the sage hen population this week though many hunters claimed personal success. Weekend weather improved conditions after rain on opening day. The season spanned Saturday Sunday and Monday and affected Beaverhead and Madison counties only.
