Service Man Thompson of Dillon Joins 5th Fleet

Rayburn E. Thompson 33 fire controlman third class USNR of Dillon Montana serves with the 5th Fleet occupation forces aboard the USS Colahan Tok yo Bay Delayed. A veteran of the Tokyo strikes Okinawa invasion and the July August strikes against Japan he married Barbara Grey and has two sons.

Discharged Army Air Base Sergeant George D. Kurtz Honored

Sgt. George D. Kurtz son of Mrs. Bertha M. Kurtz Dillon completed 38 months service with the Seventh Ferrying Group A T C at Great Falls Mont receiving an honorable discharge under the point system with 82 points. He flew as aerial engineer on a C 87 Liberator Express and made 130 hump trips with the India China division of Air Transport Command at Chabua and Assam. He earned the Asiatic Pacific theater campaign medal with three battle stars the air medal the distinguished flying cross the good conduct medal and a unit citation. Prior to service he worked for Warner Food Store Dillon. He is married to Mrs Thelma Banning Kurtz of Dillon.

Dee Pigman Dies at Local Hotel at 53

Dee Pigman 53 World War I veteran died Monday morning at a local hotel after years of poor health. Born February 10 1892 in Prestonburg Kentucky he lived eight years in Beaverhead County and worked at the Lowell Smith ranch near Armstead. He served with the 323d Field Artillery April 29 1918 to May 26 1919. Survived by brother Dudley and sister Jennie of Prestonburg. Funeral held this afternoon at Brundage chapel with Beaverhead American Legion in charge. Burial in Mountain View cemetery Legion plot.

County War Fund DP Far Short in Beaverhead

Beaverhead county has collected 2135.30 toward a 4843.50 War Fund quota. County chairman Lew D. Brundage warned the goal is 2708.20 away and unlikely to be reached this month. Four communities have not reported: Argenta Wisdom Dell and Reichte. Additional Dillon area contributions are hoped this week.

Beaverhead Federation Plans Dillon Fall Meeting

Beaverhead County Federation of Women’s Organizations will hold its annual fall meeting in Dillon on Saturday November 3. Delegates from Wise River Wisdom and Shakespeare clubs attend, with reports from officers and committees, a Dillon Youth Recreational Center briefing, luncheon, and afternoon talks by Prof. Rush Jordan and Mr. Paul Anderson of the Normal college faculty. Two dozen Colorado blue spruce trees were planted on the Normal campus this month with favorable growth and health observations.

Marine sergeant aided by bar patron recovers lost billfold

Sgt. Sidney P. Hodges of Memphis lost $80 and papers in Dillon after stopping en route to Helena. A restaurant attendant recognized Hodges from a picture in the billfold and directed him to the man who had found it in the bar next door. The finder refused reward, saying Hodges earned it.

Fannie B. Jones 75 Dies in Dillon After Ill Health

Mrs. Fannie B. Jones 75 wife of Thomas W. Jones died at her Dillon home at 8 15 this morning after years of ill health. Born Ithaca New York July 5 1870 she came to Dillon in 1882 and later lived in several eastern states before moving here from Chicago ten years ago. Forest Service Training Camp Underway at Wisdom

Twenty members of the Beaverhead National Forest staff attend a timber management training school in Wisdom this week. Sup. W. W. Wetzel and A.Sup. H. H. Hendren lead sessions on timber sales policies, marking, cruising, and appraisal procedures. After the course, eight men will survey Swamp Creek's timber supply for two months, weather permitting.

George Russell claimed by illness in Beaverhead County

George Russell 79 of Beaverhead county died Sunday after a brief illness at the county hospital following a stroke. Born December 25, 1865 in St. Lawrence County New York he homesteaded near Dillon in 1912 and later worked on county ranches.
