Service Men Leave Posts for Home and Training

Service members from several commands take leaves or report for new training. Frank Kurtz of Willamette University travels from Oregon to Washington for commisssion training. Charles Richardson spends leave with parents then heads to New York for reassignment after 18 months in the South Pacific. Multiple others, including James Mountjoy Myron Axe Alfred Fidler and Francis Marler, are on leave or training, with Marler aboard the USS Cowpens as key carrier in operations across Pacific targets.

Schools to close for district meetings in Dillon and Beaverhead

Beaverhead county high school and Dillon public school will close from Thursday noon through Friday for Montana Education Association district meetings. Many teachers will attend sessions in Bozeman and Missoula. classes resume Monday as usual.

Past Noble Grand Night Observed at IOOF Hall

Diana Rebekah lodge honored past heads of the order during Past Noble Grand Night at the IOOF hall last Thursday. Nellie Nelson served as noble grand. seven pinochle tables were in play and awards went to Mildred Henningsen and Ditty. A gift was presented to bride Selah Rogers as Lallah Wolf sang.

Miss Elena Slipcevich spoke to the Dillon Rotary Club on the Anaconda youth center development. She, as director of girls physical education, described school participation and the center’s safe late hours after games. High school pupils and graduates engage, with access up to age 21 for members.

Carl Hansen Claimed Dillon Home After Illness

Carl C. Hansen 60 prominent former Beaverhead rancher died at his Dillon home Saturday after a yearlong illness. Born in Denmark December 17 1884 he came to Beaverhead in 1909 with wife Christine Overgard and bought the A E Graeter ranch on Horse Prairie. Surviving are widow a son Carl O Hansen of Helena a Seattle couple a Dillon daughter Mrs Alice Orr two sons in law and daughter in law a step son and step daughter and other relatives. Funeral Tuesday at St James Episcopal with Masonic graveside rites at Mountain View cemetery.

George Baker Speaks at Veterans Meeting

George R. Baker, manager of the local United States Employment Service, addressed Lloyd Whipple post Veterans of Foreign Wars at the city council chambers last Thursday. A special meeting is set for tomorrow night at 8 30 with all members and eligible service men urged to attend. The talk covered USES work aiding discharged veterans.

Hereford Sale Sets Records at Dillon Auction

Sixty Montana Hereford bulls sold for an average of 442.68 at the Dillon Hereford Futurity sale. The price average rose nearly 100 from last year and surpassed the two previous Montana sales. Top bid of 1525 was paid by John Dooling of Jackson for the grand champion.

Victory Loan Drive Opens Next Monday in Beaverhead

Beaverhead county will launch its Victory loan drive next Monday October 29 Liberty day with a total quota near a quarter of a million dollars. County finance chairman W W Hawkins said the bond quota is 90000 dollars a reduction from the last war loan but will require strong support from every Beaverhead resident to meet the goal.

Mrs. Vince Schmittroth Summoned in Dillon Obituary

Mrs. Anna Schmittroth 61, longtime Dillon resident and wife of Vince Schmittroth, died after a three year illness. Born in Oslo January 5, 1884 she moved to the U S at 27, lived in Salt Lake City Ely Nevada Twin Bridges Dillon and Salmon Idaho where she ran bakeries before returning to Dillon. Survived by husband John Wold of Fairmont Minn a brother in Norway and several in laws. Funeral held at Brundage chapel with Rev Lewis D Smith officiating. Interment Mountain View cemetery.

Lois Hazelbaker hosted the American Association of University Women gathering in Anaconda Monday. Elena Sliepcevic, a Normal college graduate and PE teacher at Anaconda High, discussed the Ton of Fun youth center program and fielded questions.

Livestock Shipments Through County Progressing

An unusual stream of sheep and cattle moved via the Union Pacific over the past two weeks with stock trains passing through Dillon daily. Cars are added at loading points south to Monida, delays occur but handling improves as loading capacity slowly returns to normal.

Beaverhead Rodeo Association president Herman Peterson calls a November 7 meeting in the county courthouse. Stockholders will decide profits from the 1945 show and officers for the next year will be elected. Total receipts were 13 605.26 and disbursements 7 228.97.

Funeral Rites Held for Mrs Clyde Smith in Dillon

Funeral services for Mrs. Clyde Smith, a respected Dillon matron who died October 15 in a Butte hospital, were conducted Friday afternoon at the Brundage funeral home chapel. The Rev L Belle Long of the First Baptist church officiated, with a large turnout. Interment followed with pallbearers Ben Davis Lou Wells Walter Featherly Norman Nelson H M Warner and Guido Schaefer.

Beaverhead county high school sends Bruce Grimes and Eugene Bennett to join the all-state band to perform Friday night in Bozeman. College Instructors Attend Divisional Meets Across Montana

Normal college faculty will attend division meetings this week with Miss Genevieve Albertson at Great Falls Professor Paul Anderson at Miles City and Prof Rush Jordan at Glasgow. Classes will run on schedule despite absences while staff cover duties. Jordan represented the college in Helena at a conference shaping a new course.

Aged Dillon Resident Dies Monday Morning

William Brockbank age 84, born in Liverpool England in 1861, died Monday morning at the county farm after 27 years in this section. A naturalized citizen since 1893, he came to Beaverhead County in 1918 and worked as a laborer on ranches and in Dillon until impaired by age ended his work. He had no known relatives in this country.
