Conservation Drive Mobilizes Beaverhead County Thepledge

The Dillon area launches a county wide conservation drive led by Frank Hazelbaker with volunteers canvassing every household to sign pledge cards. A meatless and wheatless week aims to save resources for allies as Dr. F. H. Gardiner cites food shortages and waste. Sixteen Men to Leave Tuesday for Camp Lewis

Beaverhead county will send sixteen drafted men to join a larger Montana contingent traveling by special train to Camp Lewis. The group includes Stew Otto Carlson, Edgar Barrett Rife, Andrew J. Schuyler, and others. A further call for five more men due to rejections at American Lake follows, with twenty six additional men ordered to report for examination on November 7.

Beaverhead County Gains Permanent Red Cross Chapter

Beaverhead county is granted a charter to form a permanent Red Cross society affiliated with the national organization. The B C R chapter will base its headquarters in Dillon and all county Red Cross work requires sanction from the head office. A meeting on October 16 organized committees including secretary Annabel Edinger and chairman B N Stevenson to run activities and appointments across the county. Women are urged to come to city hall on Tuesday and Friday afternoons to fulfill their patriotic duty.

Beaverhead countyers subscribe to the Second Liberty Loan, totaling over 1600 buyers from ages 16 to 60,000 dollars, exceeding the 330,000 goal with 450,000 in bonds. The Oregon Short Line led with the largest amount as Frank Hazelbaker praised volunteers and the county’s 60 dollar per person average.

Postage Rates Take Effect After November First 1917

After November 2 1917 letters and first class mail are three cents per ounce or fraction. Drop letters from the posting office to delivery carry two cents per ounce. Postcards require two cents prepaid and two cent charged on written private cards. Postmasters urged to ensure correct postage. Chester Barrett drove to Dillon from Grant with sister Miss Barrett.

Eleven more recruits leave Dillon for Missoula final exam

Eleven young men left Dillon for Missoula to take final examinations before joining Uncle Sam's army. Eight enlisted in the Twentieth engineers and eight in the medical department. All were Poindexter & Orr Livestock employees. total from Dillon reaches eighty in the forestry office reported by Supervisor Somers.

Auto 18 Struck by Short Line Engine

F A Shoemaker of Western Wholesale Grocery injured when his auto truck was struck by a Short Line engine near Bannack street. Misa Frankie Andrus and George Patrick, also of the same company, escaped with minor injuries while Patrick pulled Shoemaker clear and Andrus clung to the pilot until the engine stopped. The engine moved about five miles per hour. Robert Beattie visited Anaconda at the Metlen yesterday.
